Independent Vehicle Inspection

I'm going to be buying second hand car next week, and was just wondering if having an independent vehicle inspection is worth the money, and also who to use to carry it out? RAC, AA, any others?

I've read various horror stories of people getting RAC inspections only to find after the inspection glaringly obvious faults that the engineer has just ticked a box as pass?
