an almost sensible choice while still being a fun choice.

FWIW I was in a very similar situation to you. Live in London, hadnt had a motor for about 5 years. I bought a beautiful red s2000 a month ago , 35 on the clock, for 10k , and I haven't stopped smiling since - despite the weather. They are fking fantastic. I keep mine garaged outside London which helps MASSIVELY on the insurance, and means I can sleep peacefully without worrying about some Scrote in the street having a go at it.
Seriously - buy one

Every second was a blast when I had mine, something that I realise (currently running a 3 series bimmer) more than ever....oh, and you can fit a tent behind the seats! Did a couple of European road trips in mine, no probs

Was looking at a m5/3 or something in Audi's S division (RS was probably out of my sensible price range) and ended up with a Jag S-type R. Figures on paper are similar to the M3/5 of a similar age but well aware that doesn't apply to anything bar a straight road!
Absolutely sublime V8 with a 'charger and loads of power when required. Not sure it fits your weekend only car unless you're after a relaxed cruiser with a great turn of speed but I'm pretty delighted I chose that as a daily :-)
