How's this for an idea:
Old transporter with bikes, toolkit, mattress etc in the back.
One person drives the van, the other drives whatever toy you're bringing. Switch periodically.
The upsides are that you get to have some fun on the journey there, and you don't have to tow a large trailer (don't fancy it personally). You can bring plenty of stuff too.
The downsides are that you have to have a road legal car, you pay for two lots of fuel and you'd have to sleep in close proximity with whomever you brought with you...

Makes even more sense with a motorbike:
That really is uncomfortable on the motorway and has absolutely no room for lugagge!!
Once the bike is in the mountains though, thats an experience!!
You dont have to spend £40k neither. There are plenty of sub £10k options with less than stellar mileage available.
