The XJR6 engine has been done a couple of times. No idea about the V8, but if Beacham can put them in a Mk2, I'd guess they would go into the XJ6C.

I've been dabbling with the idea of putting an AJ16S into my '40, ever seen that done?

Been really thinking about this beasty today. What a good project if you could find one that wasn't too rot (or you could get the panels and cut out the metal moth) then create a cool retro-ride using XJR running gear and electronics/suspension etc, a-la Beacham Jag Mk2

It could even be subtly brought up to date like this one:

One of the best Jags i ever did see!!!

No... I think its a bit complex with all the electronics involved.

I've not seen it either though the ideas been dicussed in the XJ40 community.

I think the way to go is to use the Getrag manual 'box and run the engine on an aftermarket ECU, perhaps Megasquirt it.

Megasquirt is the way I'm doing my series 1 XJ6.

The problem with an XJ40 would not be getting it running; there's many ways of achieving it. The problem comes from trying to keep the electronics for the gearbox, the instrument binnacle, the air conditioning, the trip computer and various other parts happy, otherwise you end up with a multitude of problems and warning lights.

An AJ16S will run (badly) on the normally aspirated 4.0 ECU so no doubt an ECU specialist could tweak it to suit. It doesn't have any of the over complex security that the later X300's have either.

I assumed you'd just leave the standard ECU in place to control all the non-engine gubbins and fit an additional one for engine duties.

Keeping an auto 'box would be tricky no doubt though my car is already manual so that wouldn't be a concern for me at least.

Which engine's going into the S1, AJ16S?

Yes, AJ16S and manual gearbox into a S1. I've had it running, but loads more still to do.

Sounds great. Have you got a build thread posted up anywhere? I'd be interested in a squint.

Stunning machines, perhaps the beautiful saloon coupe made IMO.

Would have been nice if Jag had of made a Forty coupe, I guess they couldn't justify it with the XJS in the stable though.

Look better with a vinyl roof

Looks horrid. The proportions are all wrong - door too long, wheelbase too short, and the XJ40 was never a pretty car to start with. Good job they didn't bother.

Not pillarless.
Not low enough.
Not enough black on it.
Otherwise fine.

Welding the front and back of an xj40 together a coupe does not make...

Personally I really like the idea of an XJ40 coupe but then I'm a fanboy of the model!

I agree that this concept could be better. I believe it does have a shortened wheelbase, keeping it the same as the four door would have been preferable. A thicker C pillar would be nicer as would lowered ride height especially at the rear, it looks a bit stilty. I can see they were trying to modernise the appearance with body colour bumbers and the like which doesn't work so well for me, not my choice of colour either.

I wouldn't describe the '40 as pretty either but I do think they are very handsome machines with styling very much of the period. They might not have been fashionable in recent years but were more progressive in their day than the subsequent excessively retro looking efforts.

XJ40's are very sensitive to wheels/colour and headlights. A four headlight base model with tweed trim and the steels just looks like a seventies Toyota Crown. A Square headlight Soveriegn in black with the alloys (even the early ones) looks okay. I thought the four headlight front end was appalling - four round lights with the plastic surrounds that looked like four miniature washing machines. After the Series 3, it really was a let down and they really need the big oblong lights. I'm probably alone in liking the TWR version of the XJ40 though, particularly in red with the big flat faced TWR wheels - definitely a car of the eighties.

The X300 really was a massive leap forward and it's what the XJ40 should have been in '86.

My dad was always a Jaguar man when i was growing up and i guess it kind of gets passed on, similar to which footy team you support.

I have owned three thus far, the most recent being a XKR convertible.
Before that i had a V12 XJS.

However the first one i owned was BRG Series 3 V12.
I had always yearned for one and in 1999 i took the plunge.

I can honestly say, hand on heart, it is the only car i have ever truly loved.
I think there is something magical when you buy your first Jaguar, something that only other owners can understand ?
Sure it overheated when the sun came out and of course it had the usual air-con and electric problems.

Did i care about these things ?....did i heck !
The first night i picked that car up and went for a wafting drive on my own i used £60 of petrol.
I didn't care about the money it was costing me because i felt like a king.

If i could own one car, built brand new today it would be a series 3 V12.

The only other vehicle i have had which came even remotely close in ride quality was a 4.6 HSE P38 Range Rover but it still wasn't the same and tbh i don't any other vehicle will ever give me the feel good factor that i had with that first car.

To all those who source these cars and look after / restore them, i salute you.
We will never see the likes of them again.

Most cars ride well on the back of an AA lorry!

I second the comment re ride quality of S3 Xjs and P38 RRs. Had both - very difficult to find modern cars which offer a comparable experience...
