See, I don't get this with the P38 ride quality. I've currently got a 2007 XJR and a 2001 4.6 Vogue for weekend tooling round town.

The ride quality on the XJR is faaaarrrr superior to that of the RR, on any surface you care to mention, excepting kerbs and sharp stuff like that of course!

The RR jiggles, dives, wafts, floats, lurches, follows cambers and generally wallows around like a ship at sea dragging itself across rocks.

The Jag however, even with 20" wheels, largely soaks everything up in controlled and cosseting manner, the only exception being that it occasionally allows a little shock up into the cabin if a sharp edged pothole catches it out.

So if you think an old RR was good, you need to try an x350.

XJ40's are very sensitive to wheels/colour and headlights. A four headlight base model with tweed trim and the steels just looks like a seventies Toyota Crown. A Square headlight Soveriegn in black with the alloys (even the early ones) looks okay. I thought the four headlight front end was appalling - four round lights with the plastic surrounds that looked like four miniature washing machines. After the Series 3, it really was a let down and they really need the big oblong lights. I'm probably alone in liking the TWR version of the XJ40 though, particularly in red with the big flat faced TWR wheels - definitely a car of the eighties.

The X300 really was a massive leap forward and it's what the XJ40 should have been in '86.

Owners are certainly divided over which front lamp treatment is better, quads or fishtanks. I prefer the quad lamps personally, it's a more traditional Jag look and suits a sporty Forty variant (my Sov has been converted to quads).

Your not alone in liking the 40R, it's popular with enthusiasts, I've had one previously. Values seem to be on the rise.

The X300 is a great car but not a massive leap forward by any means. Let's face it, it's a series 2 facelifted XJ40 really, with regressive styling to look like a series 3 XJ. It's fundermentally the same car underneath with various improvements and revisions.
