Car warranty help
Discussion
Just bought an Impreza WRX and now I'm looking at 12month warranties.
What are your recommendations?
How do they work?
And I don't really want to spend over £180 on one.
I've found http://www.gocarwarranty.co.uk/ who'll cover my car for £99, has anyone had experience with them?
Thanks.

Ask yourself this... do you really think a warranty company can make money by paying out on a 99 quid warranty?
No, thats why I asked for recommendations.. I had Warranty Direct pay out for a £2k gearbox repair a few years back - but it took a threat of court action to get them to pay up.
The warranty also cost more than double your budget, just to put things into perspective.

Not really the whole story, else insurance would be pointless. You're swapping an unknown possible cost, with a known guaranteed cost. However you're right to the extent that a £99 warranty will have a lot of restrictions on what it covers, and the max payout value will be low.

Okay, lets say my budget is £400 then.
The point that is struggling to be made is that most 3rd party warranties are so carefully written that it can be virtually impossible to get them to pay out.1 mile over the service interval ? Out of warranty.
Item failed after a spirited drive ? Fair wear and tear and rough driving caused it.
Clutch failed ? Consumable item - not covered.
You're generally better off putting some cash aside each month in an emergency account.

Sam, this is what I was getting at.

I have a Merc and quite a few people on the Mercedes forums have WD warrsnties and they generally get a good press. Some people, especially the ones with air suspension, have had a lot of money out of them. When you've got a car where almost the slightest thing could cost a grand, it's good peace of mind to have a safety net. However if they do muck people about when it comes to claiming then that rationale fails.
The cover looks OK until 7-8 years old. I'm at that point now but don't really want to run the car without any safety net, as it needs to be available all the time so I can't be spending time looking for used parts ar cheap ways to repair it.
I would guess WD would blow the OPs budget out of the water though for his car.

I see. Good point, I'll just put money aside. 1 mile over the service interval ? Out of warranty.

Apart from the clutch (and I know someone with a 9mth old Lexus who was told he would have to pay for a new clutch) do you have any first hand experience of refusals in the other cases or did you just make them up?Item failed after a spirited drive ? Fair wear and tear and rough driving caused it.

You do see complaints but it's one of those things where people will be quick to complain, but few would post up a positive experience.
You've got to be reasonable about keeping the car serviced and Warranty Direct do cover failures due to wear and tear. The biggest issue I see is that you have to bear in mind these things are insurance policies, and something has to actually break, or stop working, for them to pay out. "It's making a funny noise" or an intermittant fault isn't going to cut it.

Yes, to all 3. Warranty supplied by the dealer. Warranty co. refused to pay out in all 3 cases. You do see complaints but it's one of those things where people will be quick to complain, but few would post up a positive experience.

I foolishly brought a third party warranty for my alfa 156 some four years ago. I bought because it was the 'gold' cover from the motor trader at time of purchase. Thought it would be a good idea for my first Alfa ownership experience. When i actually read what it covered (the small print) it didn't cover anything. So many exceptions, exclusions and hoops to jump through, it was unbelievable. I cannot remember the exact words used, but it was worded at the front that everything was covered, but the small print meant virtually nothing was covered..... Pah.
Luckily, the alfa didn't let me down, and i should have looked into the cooling off period once i had the warranty......
Live and learn.....
