Looking at getting my good lady wife a hilux to learn to drive in. Seems like a decent plan, good visibility, sturdy controls, doesn't matter if we bump in to stuff. Any reason why not?

It matters to the car you bump into though!

I think you'll be surprised at the strong money they're commanding, ever since 'that' top gear episode the 4x4 pickups have almost gained a cult following, with the prices to match! Not sure about other variants though, something like a hilux surf might be a bit better value for money.

You may have trouble insuring it as they are classed as commercial, worth checking first.

I have a mk2 hilux as a daily driver - if you plan to learn in the hilux and take the test in an instructors hatchback - there is a big difference when it comes to manouvers/parking. There is no way you could do a 3 point turn in the tight streets tha I did my test on in an old hilux, they have the turning circle of a ferry. And sections like the emergency stop feel very different in an unloaded pickup to a modern hatch. That said, Mine has been bulletproof and very useful this "summer".
