Keep up the good work!!...
You wouldn’t be looking for a new spanner monkey to put these things back together when you're done would you Ken?
You're right, he is a top block.

The truth is, both David Beckham and Ken Block aren't anywhere near as good at cricket as I am. Or tennis. Actually Beckham is probably good at both. He's one of those annoying guys who just ends up being good at every sport.

Anyway this topic of conversation is null and void. Chris has given us the definitive answer. Chris has met him.

The rest of us are just little sh-ts who love to whine. Accept it.

Fair play to Mr Block for responding in such a measured way. I bet if it was Plato he'd have just tried punching anybody who didnt like what he'd done.

Surely you meant to post this as a comment on YouTube? It would fit so well on there and you could then open a 'debate' with a mass debating society of 8 to 18 year old's who have all the answers, but no real experience, but who feel able to 'learn you good' with every new comment.
Unduly harsh. He's 20. He's still rocking the big "L", but he's over 18.
Just.

Besides, everyone knows the ones who know least, know it all.
Way to miss the point.

Dan Trent should quit digging!

Once you type something on an internet forum, and it is misread or taken out of context, there ain't no way of fixing it because people read half the comments/don't watch the videos they are supposedly commenting on, and some of them are just looking for an argument*,etc. Best to just move on..

FWIW, I wish I had a fraction of the talent of Ken Block.

  • An exception should be granted for the Classic Car threads, where you can go for a generally decent level of conversation and no trouble (except LotusOmega might get you in hot water with your mother-in-law).

Thing is. Ken Blocks videos are very entertaining but is there anything in them that you or I couldn't do with enough money and time to practice?

Haters gonna hate but if I had his money I would be playing with toys like this and if you can make a video out of it that makes millions of hits and promotes your real business? Well it's worked beautifully hasn't it!

The endless Ken Block Conundrum.

Much as I love the fact that the rise of New Media, such as internet forums, has given us all a voice, it really has made it easy for people to go off half cocked, hasn't it.

Ken Block untalented ?
Oh behave yourselves.

If you can't see the Gymkhana videos for what they are, entertainment, then you're grabbing the wrong end of the stick.

The latest one, from start to finish, is a never ending serious of stunning backdrops, skids, screaming engine and, dare I say it, humour.
It's clearly a marketing device for the shoe company behind it. It's not competitive motorsport.

The fact that it involves a monstrously powerful rally car makes it all the more attractive to any petrolhead. Great marketing device IMHO.

Those of you complaining about his lack of talent, you've all watched the videos.
If you don't actually get what they're about, that's not somebody else's fault.

I'm with Harris et al.

OK, he's not quite up to the standard of Loeb, but not many people are.
Ken's very good at knowing how to do the stuff that people will want to watch.
Lots of skiddy stuff, which isn't actually that quick, hence doesn't win rallies.
In other words, he drives the way that the rest of the drivers would if it weren't for the fact that they have to be quick rather than spectacular.

It's well thought out entertainment, a bit like Top Gear.
Ohhh noo, there's another argument...
Well said smile

It certainly is healthy to hear people make suspiscious remarks on this guy when what is doing is made purely from a commercial point of view. Let's be honest - he's getting a stick because people expect stunt drivers at the wheel of a WRC car to deliver spectacular results in WRC, which obviously isn't the case here.

I sure wish I had 10% of his skills and I'm sure he is a great petrolhead, but all this hype around him and the commercial st is enough for me to rank him as the average 21st century commercial muppet at the same level as Lady Gaga.

ETA : I'd even say this might give rallying and rally cars a poor image among people who may not know what rallying actually is, and that is not about making stunts.

Or is there really nothing too wrong with being a bit of a perfectionist. Yeah, he's clearly had a good few practice runs first, he probably recorded all of them, and picked out the best parts, to make the best, most entertaining video.

What's actually wrong with that?
You're right.

Gymkhana 6 should be all CGi.

Ken Block has plenty of talent and WRC must be delighted he has thrown his Fiesta in the ring. So Loeb is faster? Perhaps one of the fastest ever to rally. What Block does with a MkII Escort is very impressive and he is earning his bobble hat tips race by race.

Are you suggesting it's less "real" because he drove the course a few times first?
Well its like all those pansy rally drivers who have recce runs and pace notes.... surely they should just have their times wiped for not being good enough??

And pretty much any other motorsport in the world where they have Free Practice sessions before the race to get a feel for the course and make any required setup adjustments....

Nope, i'm suggesting it should be a best run not a collection of best bits from each run. Otherwise, it might as well be CGi.

I'm with Dan, something new please.

Sometimes there just isn't more. I mean what do you want, jet packs, Star Trek style teleporters or the car ending in a huge fireball of an explosion?

Or lets recap:

-a car
-a person
-an area of ground to drive it on

Remembering:

-they don't want to kill themselves
-the laws of physics

What exactly do you want him to do new? Sing a song... dance a jig... some stand-up maybe???

Not 5 donuts in a small space.

Not drifting round a slow moving object.

Something spectacular without the kitsch things that make these pretty dull IMO.

I'd love to see this done from a motorsport angle as opposed to an advertising angle.
