He is right. My Megane is a rare 3 wheel version. Also, instead of an engine, it has a shrubbery. The boot is in fact a black hole and instead of seats it has two small cookers. Not that you can get in; it doesn't even have doors.

The Obeast said:
Speaking with Autocar, Peugeot UK's managing director Tim Zimmerman said: "We have to find our own niche, and one in which we can expect to sell a significant number of cars. The Renaultsport route has its own appeal, but it is not the way we want to go. We want more emphasis on everyday usability, where we think we'll find a larger audience.

I may be reading that statement wrong, but is he trying to say that renaultsport products lack everyday usability?
I read it as Peugeot saying there car isn’t as good as the Renault but they weren't trying anyway!..
(Selling the car short before its release if you ask me!..)

Isnt that the entire point of a hot hatch though? Be practical enough to be an only car, rather then having a stty hatch for the groceries and a TVR in the shed for the weekend hoon.

Still, not impressed by this 208 thing, looks like someone stuck a plastic Kia model in an oven, melted it a bit and put a peugeot badge on front.

I understand the comments about the 205 GTI but the 206 GTI (180) was an awesome tool!..

I agree about the 155bhp GTI version it should be a GT or an XSI and not a GTI.
Didn't stop VW trying it with the NA GTI and the Turbo version wonder what the % sales were for the different engine outputs?

When will Peugeot release a nice looking car again? Their entire range has been ugly for years! They could start by changing that awful big black grin they all have.

I suppose we musn't forget that we are very well informed as a group but when most people buy a car many do so on looks and reputation etc and as they don't care about driving much the low power version would be fine.

When I buy a camera I go in a shop and ask for the best for the price and if it looks good and seems clever I buy it - I'm sure all the forum members at "Photoheads" would weep with laughter at what I end up with....

lets have a think about this,
it's light, even the feline loaded version at 1095kgs, it has 156bhp tubby engine, which i'm sure can be 'mapped' as the current mpg figures for this are 35.8 mpg urban, 62.8 extra urban and 48.7mpg combined.

0-60, 8.1 sec, wasn't the 205 1.6 8.7 and the 1.9 7.8? is so that's pretty quick while delivering those mpg figures.

being light and with the possibility of a 200bhp engine I'd say it's looking pretty hot tbh.

Question is, would they do a rallye version base spec with big engine?

the Virtual blue looks a nice colour, comparative to the miami/cobalt blue of the 205/106.

hell even the 106 gti was listed as 8.4sec 0-60.

I'd buy one. Hell, 15k, that's what a 205/106 gti would cost new and thats not taking into account inflation.

Lets all go for a test drive and report back shall we?

I bet it will break before it rusts though.

I must remember to buy one in 7 years when they are about 2k biggrin

Ok...I'm going to just say it ....205 Gti

There.

Looks like a smart car but the 205 is this cars biggest problem...that and the 106...and the 306...
i love the way so many people remember the 205 with rose tinted spectacles.

Yes the 205 was good, but have you driven one lately.

Although saying that this will be just another iteration of the terrible 207 Gti using the same engine too.

Peugeots days of hot hatch club are gone, and thats before we mention the blighting of this car with the selfdestructing PSA 1.6 lump.

nice lookign car though, although not sure what the knightrider bit is int he grill.

Its interesting that the Peugeot spokesman said that they dont want to go down the Renaultsport route. Someone should point out the new Renaultsport clio to this guy, and tell him that they dont need too, the reanultsport route is coming to them instead.

So now Citroen, Peugeot and Renault are all going to build the same style of hot-hatch:

1.6 turbo charged engine
5 doors
Kerb weight the same as a small sized planet
And about as much fun to drive as having your nasal hairs plucked by a cave-troll

Woo Hoo!!!

It's just a GTi. Just needs good economy and comfort for long hauls.
If it was a sports hatch they would have called it a Rallye.

Fair point but I think the problem is its reputation and how good it was next to its rivals then. Just gives people higher expectations of Peugeot's hot hatches forever.

This raises an interesting point: cars are being fitted with an ever decreasing pool of engines shared between manufacturers, which in the "interesting driver's cars" segment leads to lack of real choice. I'm fairly sure this basic 1.6 turbo engine appears in quite a few other warm cars, unless I'm thinking of something else.

Maybe one reason people rave about the hot Clios (and, currently, the GT86) is that they offer something so different.

Just a thought.

Here's hoping they do a stripped out, basic, cheap Rallye version.

Unfortunately, I suspect they'll give us the same crap they've been churning out since discontinuing the 106 and 306.

A modern 106 GTi or Rallye would be most welcome

I sort of understand not wanting to chase Renaultsport by making it too hardcore, but they could've copied Renaultsport idea and offered a 'cup pack' or called it the Rallye pack or whatever. This way the general public get a car for them, and we'd get one for us. Problem solved. And from what I hear it's a pretty good chassis anyway so development costs shouldn't have been that high...

Just to confirm Johnnytheboy's views on the 1.6-litre turbo engine - Peugeot, like many other manufacturers, no longer make specific engines for particular ranges, but use them in many different guises, and also supply them to other manufacturers.

Their latest 1,598cc engine was a joint design with BMW/Mini. It is to be found in 207s, 308s, RCZs, and several other larger Peugeots - plus also found in several warm/hottish Citroens (Peugeot own Citroen, of course). Every Mini and his dog seem to use the same engine in one guise or another, including the current turbocharged Cooper S Works, which is rated at 211bhp. The Peugeot/Citroen intended engines are built in France, whereas all the near-identical Mini engines are built at a factory near Birmingham Airport in the UK.

Pure bred ? Not any more ....

Don't Ford, PSA and MINI share a 1.6 diesel too?

Close, but no cigar - the shared 1.6-diesel made by Ford at Dagenham (I watched them being built only last week) is also fitted to Peugeot, Citroen and Volvo cars, but not Mini. IIRC that uses a different BMW-inspired diesel entirely.

If it's anything like the new Gordini models then it will be the most expensive and rather pointless :/
