RE: Peugeot 208 GTI gets go-ahead

This wont be as good as the new fiesta or renault sport clio.
Reviews wise the 208 does not drive that nice at all and believe peugeot have said dont want to go for the hardcore appeal of the renault sport cars which in English means it just wont drive as well and will be soft like the 207.

The words spoken by Tim Zimmerman are precisely why Peugeot are in dire straits.
"We need to find our own niche in everyday usablilty" - what an idiot.
Peugeot need to make cars that people want to buy and that involves selling good vehicles with a usp and (unfortunate but true) some marketing cred. Citroen seem to have realised this (the DS range is a breath of fresh air) and so have Renault.
Also, what's that "let your body drive" advert on TV all about??
Peugeot get some hot hatch sparkle back in the range ASAP!!

I think Peugeot's main problem is that there's no longer an overwhelming reason to buy one anymore. People used to buy them because they were a kind of French Alfa Romeo - very stylish (though not to the extent of being outrageous), great fun to drive, practical, and successful in motorsport."We need to find our own niche in everyday usablilty" - what an idiot.

The current state of rallying doesn't help (this REALLY needs sorting out with more teams, cheaper entry criteria, a more unified series and prominent TV coverage - it can help sell hot hatches in the way the BTCC helps sell saloons), but Peugeot could engineer its cars with input from their IRC team to make them drive well, and I really think they need to consult Pininfarine on their styling. Ever since they brought things in-house they've been a complete and utter disaster, with only the 407 emerging with any dignity (and the 107, I suppose, but it could be argued that isn't a 'real' Peugeot). Pininfarina created and developed the Peugeot 'look' over 50 years, and it's clear to me that they've been floundering ever since.
As much as EVO magazine keeps banging on about how awesome hot Clio's are, I do wonder if enough of the damn things are actually sold to make it worthwhile.
Maybe the simple truth is that Peugeot are lukewarm on a hot GTI because they know that they will represent less than 10% of sales...
And it is not as if your mum looking for a nice diesel hatchback that will do 55mpg, will care about the "halo effect" of a GTI in the range..

So where does GTI part come into it then pal?
GTI strongly infers (through the 205GTI heritage) the 208 will be a sporty edition.
The reality is it would appear not.
It is in fact yet another moderate at every situation car.
So why not call it a TDI or a Ghia or GLX-EU or ANYTHING that HONESTLY tells the buyer what the vehicle is and what to expect from it.
and the manufacturers wonder why people cant be bothered with their cars,,,,,,,,,,

I had two 205 gti's and loved them....and maybe I do have rose tinted specs...Yes the 205 was good, but have you driven one lately.

Problem is peugeot are bigging this car up reviving their past glories and in doing raising expectations. Building light weight is not impossible...witness the Mazda 2...? Albeit not a sporty version...
Any hot hatch released will be judged against its rivals...just can't see this competing with the renault sport products?
Have driven the deisel version of the 208 and was not really very impressed. Apart from having just about the smallest steering wheel outside of a caterham it was pretty unremarkable. Utterly numb at normal speeds and only slightly better when pressing on. The one I drove was pverty spec, 5 door with hub caps which meant it also looked pretty rubbish.
I'm led to believe the steering in the petrol is a lot better, would certainly need to be.

Probably because a 205 GTI collapses like a paper bag in a crash. New cars are held to higher standards, hence their size.At least, that is what the car makers say. I think it is just laziness. It probably IS possible to make a car the same size and weight of the 205 which also passes modern crash rules, but the car makers think it is too expensive to build it, maybe...
