I do think Lotus needs to build cheaper cars though.
And there we have it in a sentence. VAG are successful where Lotus aren't because they produce cheaper cars. The same happens in housing - the UK has the smallest average room size in homes across the whole of Europe because we want the most bedrooms for the least price in our houses, and the builders oblige. We talk about Grand Designs and Top Gear and buy Barrat and Skoda. We talk about 'drivers machines' and are satisfied with harder suspension and turbo diesels. We go on about quality interiors in our houses and buy cheap knock offs in B&Q.

It's endemic in the West - stuff is sold on aspiration to people who're willing to settle for something 'like it' at a lower price. We buy from Tesco, Ebay and Amazon then get sad when our local music shop shuts and there isn't a decent butcher within miles.

We're constantly told that capitalism brings choice, but it doesn't.
But it does, without capitalism, or a system whereby people with capital can invest in people who have new ideas for products we wouldn't have any cars at all.
