I am tempted to buy a RX8. Seems like a lot of car for the money, I was wondering what sort of engine I could cram in the engine bay once the wankel inevitably kicks the bucket. Any ideas guys? I do love the S54 m3 engine but I've never even looked under the bonnet of the an RX8 so have no idea what would fit
The RX's biggest asset is its balance and handling, which is mostly down to the light and compact wankel engine which can fit very low down and behind the front axle. Either rebuild the engine (a fairly simple and relativly cheap process if you know how to lift out an engine yourself, which I presume you do if you are thinking about engine swaps!) or buy another car.

Rx8's are the biggest pile of **** I've come across in a while, rubbish mpg for little power, naff build quality and awful looks, they're cheap for a reason guys, mind you , you pays your money......
Beauty is subjective. Build quality is very good in my opinion (having owned one for 5 years now). You are right about poor mpg. I get 18mpg with normal driving. However, if you drive flat out all the time, you'll find it comparitivly efficient to a piston engine with like for like power. I think I am right in saying this is one of the main reasons why the 787B won Le Mans... then they went and banned rotaries :-(

The RX8 can be a high maintence car. If you don't look after it, it will bite you in the arse. And yes its not the fastest in a straight line, but if you keep an eye on the oil and service it every year, you will be repayed with a rear wheel drive, 50/50 weight distributed and beautifully balanced road hugging car. You'll be hooked and never look back, like me :-)

Every RX8 thread I've ever seen features one of these "I've never owned or driven one but I have an ill informed opinion and am determined to share it" posts.

Agree at traffic lights grand prix my AR GTV V6 left RX-8 behind easily, mind you I have Q2 diff so wheelspin practically eliminated in dry.
Mine (a 230 PZ) kept up with a 156 GTA with reasonable ease on straights, which I didn't expect. You may have been racing a 190 , possibly even an automatic..... And the RX8 will blow the GTV into the weeds in the twisty stuff.

Quite agree with the previous post. Most people have never been in an RX8 or owned one and provide ill-informed comments.

Keep them to themselves! If you want one buy one! I paid top price for mine as it was 6 months old and then ran it for 5 1/2yrs.

I couldn't think of anything to replace it. In the end I went for a Golf GTI, but had to get my RWD thrills, so now I own a TVR too - cue more comments from people who've never owned one....

They pushed the car away from the pump before jump starting it?
We had to push the car away yes as it was stuck in the middle off the forecourt at peak time.

agree with the mpg, but the rest is just nonsense. i had an earlier one (they got even better from there (56 on..........)) and think they are great cars and almost criminal value for money.

superb handling and balance makes-up for it's shortcomings.

i think the biggest problem with getting an Rx8 now is the lack of specialist support (i found none within reasonable distance of me). and forget the mazda dealers.....few had a clue about the car back then and it just got worse.

Looks more like a YouTube comment to me.

True. Thankfully, although useless, my local Mazda dealership were amiable and didn't mind me finding the service bulletin code from the RX8 owners club for them to look up as to how to fix things!
