Chavmobile of choice in sunny grantham too. Noisy as hell with a massive exhaust whilst not particularly going anywhere fast.

Maybe it's just me, but whenever I see one of these nowadays it has inevitably been "slammed" (as I believe the Young People describe it), is running on 28" rims, with blacked-out glass, a tailpipe the size of the Channel Tunnel and ICE (or OOCE - Out Of Car Excrement) audible as far away as Belgium. Either the next step up from a Chavalier or just going cruising wid da homies ....
Still, there are a fair few 3-ers heading the same way now so maybe the comparison is spot on. I'll get my pipe and slippers - and the keys to the Benz ....

There's one near here - resprayed in that bloody awful yellow you could get on the Ford Puma back in the 90s, with pimp tints, big wheels and a drainpipe exhaust.Looks and sounds awful. Driven by a bottle blonde orange woman with the biggest pair of sunglasses I've ever seen.
Hmm not as tempting as this, well to me at least; http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

Early S-Types are bloody awful.Really cheap interiors, with lots of bits obviously nicked from the Ford parts bin, then the gaps filled in with cheap plastic, and a reputation for destroying gearboxes and rear axles.
2003 facelift models were significantly improved - and then further improved with the revised shell in 2005.
If you're looking at Jags for a bag, then you'll be wanting an XJ40 or X300.
I had an RS200 for a year, px'd it just to make a profit. Relatively economical, sounded awesome when driven hard, ESP off and it would happily wag it's tail. Without a single beep may I add.
Then had an E46 320 'sport coupe'. Characterless dull thirsty boring thing to drive.
Now I drive a DC2 Teg and occasionally have a pang to buy another RS200. Albeit on slightly stiffer suspension but that's just personal preference!

You could actually buy them in yellow in Japan, on the Altezza AS and RS200's.Looks and sounds awful. Driven by a bottle blonde orange woman with the biggest pair of sunglasses I've ever seen.

Agree totally. A nice spec XJ40 Sport, or X300 model are much better cars than the earlier S-Types.Really cheap interiors, with lots of bits obviously nicked from the Ford parts bin, then the gaps filled in with cheap plastic, and a reputation for destroying gearboxes and rear axles.

I remember going to pick up an X308 3.2 V8 Jag a few years back, and the chap collected me from the train station in a 1999 S Type - it was bloody awful (even to his own admittence). Creaky inside, cheap plastics, noisy and just felt like a slighlty larger Mondeo. Jumping from that into the XJ8, you could tell how far superior the XJ is compared to them.

Aside from your wife's 3 series. I bet she never crashed it, hmm? Never knew the 3 series to be a widowmaker...
Sigh. Was just saying that ESP is annoying, and a 'sporty' car that nags you to turn it back on isn't very PH. But keep going...Echoing some of the things said above, really. I drove one as a commuter for 18 months and it was awful. The cabin was bland and less toys than my Toyota. Despite drive by wire accelerator that meant you had little control over what the engine did, the fuel consumpion was silly for a car of that size. The handling was so bland it made you want to cry - my wife's large MPV is better. It's the only car out of many I've bought that I considered a mistake to buy and the one I shifted on fastest.
I think the reason why a lot of people bought these when they first came out was due to the kudos / status attached with the brand of Lexus.
It was a huge success out in the USA, especially the bigger models, and was a bit of a status symbol there.
I guess people started to think the same over here, and thought they would try one as an alternative to the 3 Series / C Class / A4.
Like for like, spec for spec, I would have an E46 over this all day long. Maybe not as much kit in them as standard, but a much finer chassis to enjoy. And BMW do make a sweet 6-pot engine!

Wouldn't go so far as to say a *much* finer chassis. I've driven both and there's nothing in it, certainly nothing you would notice without a long period of time in both.At this price point, the IS200 is always likely to be a better buy.
And for the win.... LS400 V8 in the IS200 chassis with a 6spd manual gearbox.

That was one of the things I really "appreciate" with BMW, you can turn the T/C off fully with the press of a button (hold the DSC button for 3 seconds)...
I'm guessing the beeping ESP is a Japanese import thing. Not very socially responsible to drive around with ESP off! Like their speed limit bing-bongs.You can turn ESP off totally on my merc too, it's fuse 13 iirc
Always thought that Lexus were just rebadged Toyota offerings for the US but started to see a lot around so figured I was missing the point - then did some back to back with a GS V8 and a Rover V8 and while the GS had a brilliant engine, in every other respect I preferred the Rover which was very rare for me.
I defy anyone not to be horrified by the Window switches on a 2002 GS - standard Toyota circa 1978 onwards on a then £40k motor.
BUT - those window switches will still be working after the end of the world.......
