Now, by high mileage I mean at least 120k if not higher.

Should a buyer be put off this sort of mileage with FSH.

I'm talking petrol engines more than diesel and 1.8T or 2.0T types

All depends on the car and condition. I probably wouldn't buy Ford Ka with that sort of mileage, but an old Merc or BMW with a big engine I'd certainly consider. Look and listen for anything untoward and you should be fine.

I got a 5 series (540) on 127k and took it up to around 155k in the space of about 10 months. I spent a fair amount on some mileage related items (recon autobox being the main cost) but the car was good for another 100k.

At the right price I buy another high mileage car if it has been looked after properly.

Lexus GS300
3.0 Straight six

184,000 miles of fault free motoring.

Lexus history up until 165,000 miles

Only major bills were suspension arms a couple of years ago but that's expected on a 14 year old heavy car.

I bought it 6 months ago and have done 2000 miles since.

I was very tempted by a cheap 120k mile 56reg Octavia VRS 2.0T estate a couple of years back, but the thoughts of expensive turbo replacement put me off. A simpler non-turbo engine would be my choice at that kind of mileage.
I'm sure plenty of turbo cars manage that kind of mileage with no problems, but in my head at least it's too much of a risk.

I bought a 130k golf gt tdi.

Biggest mistake. Clutch, flywheel, rear bush, front bushes, water leak, wobble when you brake have all been issues.

I bought my S90 with 116000 on it, so not quite a qualifier. Up to 135000 now and not much to report except a couple of temp senders and a non-catastrophic cam belt tensioner failure, apparently not changed when the belt was done, but not necessarily advised as vital by the trade. Definitely needs some suspension and brake work now, and a new exhaust back box, but nothing £500 or so won't make good, then on for another 100000 probably.

Yes. 138,000 mile Volvo C70 T5. I'm now ten thousand or so miles into ownership.

My first car was a Ford Ka which I took to over 125,000 when I gave it to my mum. It did have quite a lot of rust though...

I’m guessing the OP wouldn’t be asking if it were an older car that he’s looking at … I mean, 120K is nothing on a 20-odd year old German motor.

I bought my mk1 MX5 with 105k on the clock it is now over 127k. Only issue I have had so far is some rusty sills and brake imbalance.

Hopefully it will keep going for another 60k smile

pffffft 120k is not high mileage! or perhaps it is, on a wky BMW or Vauxhall. rofl

Edit to add a " wink " I was joking

Three of my Volvo (two petrol one diesel) and the Golf tdi and Audi 80tdi all had over 120k on the clock when bought, all were (or still are for those I still own) superb cars.
Mileage is just a number if the car has been looked after properly

E46 318 Touring - petrol.

137k when I bought it - I do about 4k a year so don't really care about the numbers on the clock.

Suspension is a little creaky, rocker cover gaskets weep a little oil (don't they all). Full BMW main dealer history.

Very pleased with it to be honest!

Mainly BMW's, had an M3 3.0 with 160k miles, a 328 sport with 160k miles, and I think the highest was a cheap old BMW 525i sport with 210k miles which drove fine, had no service history, but came with plenty of recent bills, had plenty of life left in it, bullet proof mechanicals. For towing I bought a V70 2.5 turbo with 180k miles it never had any problems towing the racing car.

More recently bought a 2006 Bmw 335i petrol twin turbo, 180k miles, FSH from bmw and one owner, it drives exactly the same as the 70k 335i I had before it, if you changed the mileage on the speedo you'd never guess the real mileage.

Just do your homework, get one with good service history that drives nice and tight.

YES!

Its up for sale again right now - I'm moving to Australia hence I needed a cheap reliable car for a few months.

L Reg GS300
Cambelt changed at 165000 miles
Rocker cover seals changed a couple of weeks ago
Mostly lexus main dealer history
1 owner before me
MOT until mid-October
4 nearly new tyres
Electrically adjustable heated seats
Electric sunroof
Cream leather
Dark blue bodywork

I think the front nearside suspension has a knock
The bodywork needs a through "detail"
The bonnet and boot gas struts are knackered, meaning they both slam shut in the slightest breeze
Rear right electric window sometimes doesnt work
12 disc CD changer sometimes wont play some CDs
Headlamp washers sometimes dont work.
The alloys need some work.
Electric aerial has been replaced with a manual one

I dont really want to scrap it because that would be a waste of a reasonable car but I haven't got the time at the moment to entertain wheel kickers and time wasters that an advert would generate at this low price.

Looks just like this one:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3724994.htm

Needs to be collected from Tamworth, Staffordshire before Saturday 4th August. Tax expires end of July.
