The Genesis was never a replacement for the Hyundai Coupe - Genesis was a market segment up. Hyundai themselves stated this at the launch of the Genesis.

In the States the Hyundai Coupe SIII (aka Tiburon/Tuscani) and the Genesis Coupe were sold alongside each other for a time.

The Veloster is the replacement for the Coupe. And yes the styling is quirky, (as was the original '96 Coupe (RD) when it was first launched).
