I am in the process of changing my car, for something more sensible (ahem)

My lady knows very little about cars, but wants me to get a sensible car before the arrival of our child. I have been searching, up to about a grand, and keep coming up with stupid ideas (as you do biggrin)

The best I can come up with currently is a Xantia Activa (I had one in the past). It looks very sensible, but it has a 2ltr Turbo, stays flat as it corners, and is generally good fun to drive. This is deemed acceptable by her indoors.

Unfortunately my idea of an XM has been veto'd as it doesn't look like a sensible car frown

What else is deemed sensible to the masses, but is actually pretty stupid underneath?

I had this problem when my little one came along. I had an a4 1.8T sline thing that was ok but fancied a change so got a BM 335i ESTATE... extra room for all the stuff you have to cart around (plus a rottie and GSD) and you can't make do with less than 300bhp with all that weight to lug around. Mrs S wasnt convinced until she drove it and decided that she liked 300horses too. To look at it though its a plain old boring resale grey rep-box. Onjly the twin pipes gives it away to the petrolheads

I think this is what the V8 4.6 Rover 75 was made for. Just take the badges off!

Some sort of Legacy, a 3.0R?
Not exactly a sportscar but great on long flowing journeys.
They are actually pretty sensible too.

I was going to suggest this, but I don't think you'd do it for a grand,

Xantia or XM, aren't they different models?

If the Xantia doesn't look sensible, then no car will. Seriously...

Other sub £1k cars you might want to look at:

Rover 620Ti or 820Ti. Both sensible sized and with good space and a 197hp turbo 2.0 litre. The 620Ti is actually rather rapid even by modern hot hatch standards.

Do you mean the VXR8; I don't think any Vauxhall Monaros had four doors?

What about a Volvo? T5-R? S60 R?

Somehow missed the 'up to a grand' part.
Hmm, can you find an Octavia VRs for that?

I'm in the same boat as you, albeit now awaiting the arrival of number 2 any day now. I've just bought a hairdresser Celica ST for £500. Not practical in the slightest, but it was cheap, immaculate and near by. Fortunately we have my old Volvo V40 as a practical family car.

I had been thinking along the same lines with an XM, but also considered Alfa's - Decent 156 wagon's can be found, 147's are bit ropey at that sort of money and a bit limited on space but you might stumble across a good un.

Actually the Volvo V40 isn't bad if you go for the T4 (like mine), not exactly the most exciting drive in the world but 200bhp and nice toys make up for it. Plenty of choice below a grand and good sensible family credentials for the missus too (safety etc yawn...)

Impreza wagons also seem to have dipped into below a grand territory, you'd just have to tell her that it wasn't a turbo...

BMW 328i would be a good one, they fly under the radar if you get an SE.

Volvo V70 / 850 T5?

Audi A4 / A6 2.8 Quattro?

Ohh what about a Peugeot 405 MI16?

wink

Volvo T5.

I'm blasting around in a C70 T5 at the moment, and it's plenty rapid!

This but for added sensibleness get a V70 so you can fill it full of family stuff.
