thought it looked cheap frown

A bit older but a nicer colour and I'm sure you'd be able to get it for £1000

Price is 1999, not 999. Why do people do that?!

Rover 620Ti or 820Ti. Both sensible sized and with good space and a 197hp turbo 2.0 litre. The 620Ti is actually rather rapid even by modern hot hatch standards.
Good call. My dad had a new 620Ti back in the day and no way did that thing just make stock figures, it was flipping quick and not just for a rep-mobile.

My other half needs a 'small sensible car'.

I'm thinking Renaultsport Clio? Perhaps even a Twingo? Fabia VRS?

Doesn't fit your budget but a couple of guys at work have five door 4R32s for this reason. Their wives seem happy that they have bought nice sensible Volkswagens.

I'd look at E36s ... there are some tidy ones around at a grand with bigger engines. Mind you there are plenty of dogs at that price as well so careful checking is key.

V6 Vectra and Mondeos are cheap as well if you don't mind the FWD.

I miss mine frown
I'm liking that. Not sure I need an estate tho, my car doesn't get used that often...
Get it bought - surely your missus will love how sensible it is! It's an estate car for gawds sake.

Look up 'sensible car' in any dictionary and there will be a picture of am ovlov estate..

It's all about keeping a hormonal woman happy. If she thinks its normal, yet I can still enjoy it, then everybody is a winner!
No, you're a loser, you start making concessions and she'll take the piss. Next thing you know you'll be watching Corri at 8pm on a Sunday, drinking rose and waxing your chest.

Buy something that is sensible but doesn't look it, let her bh then give her the I-told-you-so when it returns 50mpg, has loads of space, never breaks down, etc.

Another vote for the 328i, great all-rounder, fantastic reliability, good looks and performance.
