Apologies about the tedious subject, but I could do with a bit of PH expertise here!

I've got a nice mechanical whine coming from the engine bay. Now it's always been there and it doesn't seem to be getting worse, but it's just so damn annoying!

I've had my ear as close to the source as possible, and the noise definitely seems to be coming from the alternator. To describe it, it's just a constant whir at idle, which rises and falls with the engine RPM.

Would I be right in thinking it's likely that the bearings in the alternator pulley are worn?

I don't want to fork out unnecessarily... so can anyone advise as to what my options are? New alternator? New pulley on alternator? Refurb?

I've found alternators on [the dreaded] eBay which have been removed from more recent cars, and are described as being in good condition. Prices are around £99.

Also, is this job DIY-able? Access to alternator seems okay; is it a case of rotating the drive belt tensioner with breaker bar > remove belt > unplug and remove old alternator > replace with new alternator > replace belt > re-tension?

Job done?

The car is a 2006 BMW E90 320d and has the M47 163 engine.

Any help would be massively appreciated!
