I'm going to visit a friend in France next week - he's asked if I can sort out a new number plate for his car, as the front one is cracked. It's a UK registered car.

However, I know that you're not supposed to be able to get a number plate without a V5, proof of address etc.

He's not going to be back in the country for a little while - is there any way I can get a replacement plate for him without showing proof of ownership? This is nothing dodgy, just trying to help out a mate.

Thanks.

Can he fax/email a photocopy? Garages and places like Halfords take them.

Use a show plates website (myshowplates.com etc) to knock up some correctly spaced ones. They'll be cheaper than Halfords and you don't need any details - and if they're correctly spaced with the BS EN markings, you're 99% likely not to get a tug.

ETA - Damn these slow fingers of mine.
