Another 'what car'... sorry

Focus ST170. Fits all your criteria perfectly.
Edit: Apart from MPG. You'd have to drive very gently to get 35mpg, though it could just about do it.
I was going to comment on the MPG too.Edit: Apart from MPG. You'd have to drive very gently to get 35mpg, though it could just about do it.
I like the standard Focus, but when I looked into getting an ST170 to replace my basic 1.6 Zetec I found the potential increase in running costs was disproportionate to the increase in fun factor. And that goes for insurance (and tax) as well as fuel.
There is a lot right about that car, but for me it falls into a rather awkward niche; neither cheap enough to appeal to the head nor exciting enough to appeal to the heart.

Huh? Sub £800 for an ST170? You let one go for £550? Looking on autotrader the cheapest one is up for £1350 , and i'd be expecting to pay £2500 for a decent one.
In fairness it had no Tax/MOT and needed the door/bumper painting where a piece of debris on the motorway clouted it, it wasn't that bad but I just wanted it gone as it was in the way and adding up say 5-800 of paintwork then the Tax/MOT before having to endure the sales process made the decision for me. These things depend on how much time you have and I dont have much at all. The first plan was to break it, sad really.I wasn't happy as I bought the damn thing in the first place but it owed us nothing really after 40K miles and being cheap in the first place. The trader who I sold it on to has had several people look at buying it but the insurance has been too high for them, its a real problem with cheap warm/hot hatches these days.
You dont need £2500 for one unless you want something spotless and mega low mileage. Either way a standard focus with some decent suspension etc is a better bet unless you really are a Ford person and like the ST brand. I wouldn't have another one.
Ridiculous. Nobody has suggested an MX5, so I will...
How about a Mazda MX5 Mk2.5 Sport?
145 bhp, 0-60 in 8 seconds
Decent Handling? FRWD lightweight roadster, say no more.
35 MPG - Maybe!. Sometimes anyway.
Insurance under £1K. Definitely less than a hot hatch.
6 gears? Check
£3.5k max... yep.
Reliability - One of the most reliable cars you can buy.
Looks decent? Of course, unless you're allergic to 2 seater convertibles
Petrol - Check!
ETA: Also an MR2 Mk3 will fit the bill.
Clio 172 / 182 if you can live without 6 gears.

That's it off of my list then!
Cheers for the reply!
Anyone have any experience of Lupo GTi's?
Leon TDI or Golf GT TDI (both in 130bhp form) would meet performance, MPG and 6-speed requirements. Cheers for the reply!
