Has always felt a bit weird to me, no idea why.

Prefer some thin soled footwear out of choice.

My Grandad always used to tell me about how he was encouraged to go barefoot when learning to drive in the army.

I do it from time to time in the summer, I find that I position my feet slightly differently but it feels perfectly safe.

I was told it was illegal but on further investigation it turns out not! I shall try this next time I'm out in the Merc as I much prefer being barefoot. The pedals in the clio are too small, stiff and sharp edged though I think.

I tried it once in my focus, the lack of foot support just felt odd. I didn't feel like I really had full control of the car. It was only for a couple of miles though so maybe after a longer run I'd get used to it. Driving barefoot is not something I really want to try again though.

I've tried it once and didn't like it at all. Found it really difficult to get a feel for the pedals. Especially the brakes.

Always have, always will. I've probably only ever done a handful of miles, shod - mind you, I'm a long-distance barefoot runner so I have a fair bit of grip :P

I always used to take my work boots off to drive an old work van. The guy I worked with thought I was odd, but I felt more in control. If i'm doing a long trip the shoes normally come off.

I don't do it unless I'm just moving my car off the drive so my missus can get hers on or off the drive (the front of our house is lined by a hedge, so you can park multiple vehicles out the front but the space to get them off is usually obstructed by whichever vehicle is parked on the drive).

Mind you, she's quite happy driving barefoot and does it when she's wearing sandals or flipflops.

I'm most comfortable driving with Adidas GSG9's on! I know some people like to wear thin soled shoes when driving, and I accept it's a comfort thing for some people. But the GSG9's ankle support is superb over longer journeys and despite the stiff, boot construction it offers superb control over the pedals.

I always assumed driving barefoot was illegal, is this not true?

I thought that too.... I do it all the time in summer, but thought I was being naughty

I've never heard of that being illegal. I often take my sandals off and drive barefoot as the thick soled, wide sandals feel like they snag on everything. Barefoot isn't me favourite way but when your shoes make your feet feel too big for the pedals barefoot is an option.

Drove in barefoot one time when I had to walk through a small flood to get to my car and didn't want to drown my only pair of shoes that I had with me... wasn't the most fun but it was doable.

I usually drive in boots with steel toes and soles. Has enough feel for me with the vehicles I use, sadly. Occasionally I have the brogues on and it does feel quite a bit better. And we've all seen that video of Senna driving the NSX in 'em so it's suitably petrolheady...

Always drive barefoot if I have been wearing flip flops. Would never drive with flip flops.

Me too, size 13 boats so my shoes barely fit under the damn pedal array!

Done it once or twice and didn't find it that comfy. I guess the only real danger is if something like a small stone getting stuck to your foot, you brake hard thus jamming stone and it causes you to instinctively pull away.

This. It will happen one day and pop goes your insurance........
