Just wondering on account of the ridiculously high incidence of nose-to-tail sheep sitting behind Sunday drivers at 40mph out and about today.
If you don't want to overtake, pull the fmadmadk back and let those of us that do, do.
Idiots.

Never on the bike syllabus except for on dual carriageways where not getting up to speed was a fail. I taught it anyway. Trainees loved it and I felt it necessary as they'd go on to bigger bikes.

I was taught but that was more my instructor than the test, to be honest whenever I'm stuck behind someone who wont overtake or thinks the speed limit is 50 they are over 40.

One of the first things I was taught..... by my Dad. Pretty much a necessity in rural Cumbria though. Always used to wonder what the people thought being overtaken by a car with L plates.

The opportunity for a learner to actually perform a SC overtake is very rare

It can be just as rare on advanced driver 'training'

I wasnt - But my wife was taught how to overtake someone on her lessons.

That said - She done her higher-speed driving (50-60mph) lessons on country lanes. I did mine on the A3

High speed lessons? How does that work, when learner drivers are restricted to 45mph? Or do you mean lessons after passing the test?

Since when have learner drivers been restricted to 45 mph?

I wasn't taught to Overtake... I will still overtake when opportunity allows though. Car isn't hugely powerful (54 bhp) so these opportunities are either a long straight, or cunningly out of a slow bit/away from a junction. Either that or getting a good run up.

Learners aren't restricted to 45mph. Unless they've changed it since December (doubt it).

I wasn't taught how to overtake apart from on dual carriageways, where as a previous poster said, you can fail/get a minor for not getting up to speed. I've kind of taught myself since passing, still not great at it though.

I was taught how to safely overtake push-bikes and other slow moving traffic (tractors etc.) whilst learning. It involves all the same basic skills as overtaking faster traffic, you just don't need as much distance/visibility to complete the manoeuvre safely.

This is another issue where our current system falls down

With tiered licencing the opportunity would be there for this

I was taught it on my lessons purely because my instructor wanted to make me a half decent driver by the time I passed, don't think it's part of the syllabus though.

The THEORY of overtaking on a SC should be discussed by the ADI but to do it practically is another matter mainly due to the lack of opportunities

In mainland uk Learners have no restriction.

I was self taught on overtakes.

I had this over the weekend in the Welsh hills. About 6-7 cars following something fairly slow, but needlessly close. So when I wish to overtake I have to wrestle my way back into the convoy, wash, rinse and repeat until clear. Very annoying.

NSL roads in wonderful sunlight and people crawl along at 40.

In Northern Ireland we are restricted to 45mph on L plates too and then once we pass there is another year of 45mph restriction on 'R' plates except this time you can go on the motorway which is nothing short of suicide as everyone and their granny tries to get past. Thankfully most of the BiB turn a blind eye to new drivers going a bit faster on the motorway, makes it safer for every one I think.

I was certainly taught how to overtake when I was learning to drive.

Nothing wrong with no overtaking, though. As long s they're considerate to people who do want to (which they all too often aren't).

I was taught how to overtake. Lots of farm vehicles as it was a semi-rural area.

Also taught to get my foot down and use the revs (it was a petrol engine!) to get up to a decent speed on a SC in NSL.
