I can't imagine the hoops Chris had to jump through at Harris HQ get this one approved! It took a concerted campaign for me to receive tentative consent on a sub-£10k M5 purchase a few months back so plunging that much cash into a box of extremely complicated and potentially expensive box of tricks is simply heroic. Regardless of the outcome you have my awe and admiration. Living the dream, one day at a time, let's not think about tomorrow!
Second that. Good on you for getting what you want and following your own path. fesuvious said:
Fantastic man maths, I don't blame you one bit.
However, I'll be surprised if it works out as you hope. 550's haven't reached the bottom yet, neither have 575's.
In the last few months prices of 550s and 575s (especially manual 575s) have started to rise, not sure whether or not this is dealers marking them up or actual demand though. If they fall back again I can't see proper no stories cars ever falling much below £40K IMO. However, I'll be surprised if it works out as you hope. 550's haven't reached the bottom yet, neither have 575's.

Fair play. Very nice car, the Ferrari V12's are heard to beat for noise, nicer than the V8's even.
I am guessing Chris made 40k on the GT3? I understand if he doesnt want to say how much but 40k deposit payed on the 599 would lead me to believe he made that on the 911. Well done. There is logic to his madness of buying a £140k+ car on the drip Though I can't think of many cars this would apply to, so well done for getting the 4.0.
Looking forward to the vid
I'm not sure he made £40k. I recall reading an article back in Evo when he bought the 911 where he was already putting some cash in so whilst he might have taken £40k out of the Porsche deal, some of that was already his 'equity', i.e. if he put £20k into the Porsche initially, I'd be led to believe he sold the Porsche for £160k assuming minimal debt paid down...I am guessing Chris made 40k on the GT3? I'm almost tempted to buy a 458, just for the joy of phoning Maranello every morning and asking if its OK if I take my kid to school.

Rant about Ferrari
I've never seen much real enthusiasm about the 612/599. Perhaps my own misgivings drove that but I'd gotten to a point where every Ferrari review kinda read the same - ie, "best thing ever". I just got bored of it.
I'm in no position to buy/rent or enjoy any kind of Ferrari so perhaps that's why - I just find them uninteresting.
More recently, with the 458 and now the F12 - things are changing. Both of these cars seem different to the previous generation of cars. Still, neither are bedroom-poster stuff.
In any case, it's a brave thing Chris is doing and simply because it's him - I'll read about it. I hope he changes my mind about these now-obsolete F-cars... ah how I wish for the days of the 355 again (so damned pretty).
One day, I hope to driving the likes of the RS 4.0 . I guess I'm just a Porsche man.

Decent 575's are still hovering around the £70k mark and that's for a 7 year old car which is based on a design which dates back even further. I think it's a pretty safe bet that a 3 year old 599 which is a better car in all respects won't be dipping much below £80k in the next few years and probably not even that in the year or so that Chris will probably keep it.
Who know's, if Chris's prediction is right then it may not even go down at all, it has already done 50% of it's depreciation and is likely to plateau around the £90k mark for a bit, especially bearing in mind the prices of 575's.
Considering he made an easy £40k on his RS, I think it's a very good gamble. Even if he looses a couple of grand on his original investment he will still be able to say he has owned\driven a 599, how many people in the world can say that?
Anyway the finance argument could rage for years, I'm really looking forward to watching some decent vids of him spanking it and then looking forward to Ferrari contacting him and telling him he can't make such videos without their permission

Scuderia: Oh no, this Harrisimo Monkey latte is blowing our coverino. Basta! We must ban him from all Ferrari drivinos so we can special fuelerino and set upio for maximissimo resultis.
CH: Mmm £90K Fezza daily driver post 4.0l daily driver joy. £350pcm and a house deposit - that'll do!
Scuderia: Now Paulo make it look like a grandissimo accidente and bring back the Monkey's bellisimmo t-shirtio.
Check your brake lines Chris!

I think it's quite a good read to be honest.

All he now needs to do is suggest that the Ferrari management are gay!

I don't really want to focus on this - but he's not buying anything and that £350 a month figure is just giving too many people a hard-on here.
£40K (FORTY THOUSAND POUNDS - 2 top-end Fiat 500s - 3+ years of minimum wage - a nice Sierra Cosworth 3dr ) + £350 a month is just to offset depreciation - there's a balloon (or as someone said ZEPPELIN) payment in there somewhere - lurking - waiting for the unwary...
On a good day, values will stay firm and that £40K won't have been entirely thrown into into polish for the shiny showroom windows and someone's new yacht - on a bad day, ah let's not go there eh?
Not technically correct. I own nearly 50 percent of a car. Does this mean than anyone with any outstanding borrowings on a house in the UK is not a 'home-owner'? £40K (FORTY THOUSAND POUNDS - 2 top-end Fiat 500s - 3+ years of minimum wage - a nice Sierra Cosworth 3dr ) + £350 a month is just to offset depreciation - there's a balloon (or as someone said ZEPPELIN) payment in there somewhere - lurking - waiting for the unwary...

Quite clearly finance of this type only works for short-medium term ownership. I've described the punt quite clearly: is the car going to lose £40k in the time I own it? Hope not. If it does, I knew what i was getting myself in for.
Oddly, at 8000rpm in second gear with a turn of opposite lock, none of that really matters to me. Suppose I just like cars.
Small piece of advice: when trying to quantify £40k, something slightly raunchier than '2 top-end Fiat 500s' might sell the point better.

I think the McLaren boys hinted at a bit of control-freakery in the early days but have since chilled out a bit. Plenty of journo's seem to have pretty much open access to cars and Mclaren are letting the cards fall where they may, I believe.I don't think they are nearly as precious as the Italians.
Mind you, I worked with several Italian companies in a past life. The attitude of Ferrari does not surprise me at all.

Chris,
I am glad that you experienced lurve in the RS 4.0. I really enjoyed watching your videos. (Oh... that just sounds wrong.)
Congratulations on the 599: nice. I've also been looking at prices on these over the past few months. They tend not to sell quickly. But they do look decent value and they are still striking things engineering wise despite the "old" perception. Who cares eh? I would also have reservations about the gearbox however...
Back to the RS... what made you sell now? RS 3.8 prices seem to have softened a little recently. The 991 GT3 comes out, when? Is it later this year? I am interested in buying a 997 RS 3.8 and I know I will lose money on it, but I don't mind being a bit more patient if values are about to lurch down due to the new car launch. Appreciate any insights / speculation! Thanks.
Simon.
As said in the story: finance payments were silly. Couldn't afford to own it outright. 3.8 RS looks very good news at the mo....I am glad that you experienced lurve in the RS 4.0. I really enjoyed watching your videos. (Oh... that just sounds wrong.)
