W124 estates, Discos, Subaru Legacies and, in a daring rush to the modern, Volvo XC70s

I concur... I know a guy that owns several large country estates - must be into hundreds of millions value wise - probably more.

Drives a totally fked 318i, old, rusting (badly, especially from the wing mirror mounts - nice brown stain down the side of the car) and never cleaned.

Also wears jumpers with holes in the elbows and worn out cords.

Just in the process of buying another estate (as in, country estate).

Also has the most stunning daughter - as in super model drop dead stunning. Drives a nearly dead clio.

Indeed. Old money won't replace a car if it doesn't need replacing. And W124s never need replacing.

A chap I know (of) has a Saab 900 (non turbo 3dr) that he has been running until it breaks for 15 years. It's a city car and in great condition - why would he change it when it goes from A to B reliably and in comfort?

Subarus popular with the local gentry. Also Octavia estates, XC70s.

The local Lord runs a relatively new Shogun. But it's filthy and has never been cleaned.

One of the big landowners around here does have a thing for old Bentleys however. He has late 1920's 6 1/2 that must be worth £500k.

If in the country, it is usual to let the agent or, if in-hand, one of the farm managers have the car new and then for the family to take it on when looking a little less showy-new

Up in this part of the world the estates are large and remote. The houses are often falling down unless they've had money from the mid-east put into them. The money is tied up in the estates, and owners are often cash poor. Car of choice seems to be 205 diesels or battered old VW Passats (talking about the 1980s/early 90s sort). 205s don't rust so are resistant to the worst the west coast can throw at cars.

The local lord here I am pretty sure is old money, but he doesn't have battered old w124s or Legacys as far as I am aware! He has a Veyron tucked up in his garage, I and I've seen Aston Martins around the estate a lot, so I think they could be his runarounds! V8 Vantage, DBS Volante etc.
Virtual pint to who can guess who our local lord is wink
he seems like the nicest most down to earth person, but I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him yet! One day maybe smile

Load of tosh in this thread.

Old money, like new money or no money, drive lots of different cars depending on personal choice.

Some are showy, some aren't.

This thread is more 'what do your stereotypes drive?'

How can you characterise like this? It's like saying "all plebs drive Peugeots".

It will depend on the same factors as it does for any other person - interest, purpose, available funds, etc.

Most have a Landy, an old tatty estate and a few old classics rotting in a shed.

some are a bit against the norm, however I put the physicadelic colour scheme down to attending the two most famously drug fueled educational institutes in our fair land.
