RE: McLaren's shocking one-off X1

A work of genius - finally a car thats truly original.
I think its mindblowingly stunning, as an object. Apart from the details, it pains me to say it, but most supercars (or any cars of the same type) do all look the same really - to the untrained eye. But this...wow
I'll get my coat.

No need to get your coat, I entirely agree, totally different and stunning. And guess what, when I read the article I just knew Pistonheads massive would be saying 'yuk it's ugly, it doesn't look like a Ferrari/Lambo/whatever look alike supercar. Well done McLaren I say I think its mindblowingly stunning, as an object. So what actually happened was:
Homer and Batman won for the Euro lottery roll-over and went out for a night of extreme celebration.
During the evening they excused themselves momentarily from the coke and hookers and took 2 minutes to draw up plans for their ideal car on a napkin.
They then sent them to Woking along with a cheque for a gazillion dollars.
Ron got into the office the next morning at 7:59am, picked up the fax with the brief and cheque stapled to it and thought; "meh, we'll do it"
True story.

Let’s not forget that some of the most treasured and valuable cars currently in existence are one off commissions by coachbuilders. McLaren are just picking up that baton, more power to them I say

I agree, I'm not that excited by the rear view, but in profile at least its an astonishing looking beast. I think its mindblowingly stunning, as an object. Remarkable.
I'm glad there are patrons willing to sponsor stuff that deviates from the current fashion because it becomes less predictable and more entertaining. My first thought was Citroën, Honda Insight and American styling influences from the 50s and 60s, a little bit like a four wheel Panther 6. Then I read the text and it says Facel Vega. Where is the F-V influence?

What a waste of resources.
If someone comes along and offers McLaren a blank cheque to design and build a one-off, they're hardly going to say no. Besides, MSO aren't involved in day-to-day production - they're much like Aston's Works division.I have to say though that it's not my cup of tea, but whoever paid for it obviously likes it and that's all that matters.
