how do you clean the rear wheels
I guess, by pressing a button that opens the hinged opening rear wings wink

Which sort of makes those huge wheels seem even more pointless - if no one is going to see them you could have ones small enough to put real tyres on.
A triumph of style over substance.

I like it it.

Reminiscent of this, with its transverse rear mount Cadillac 8.2 V8

I think the poster who said that this is a Marmite car is spot on.

It sort of jars with me... but when I looked at it a little later on I think that I'd really like one. If I had pockets deep enough, I'd want to drive something other-worldly. Even this car's detractors must admit that this isn't like other cars on the road. It looks like a new-age Batmobile, and something my ten-year-old inner self would love to blast down an autobahn. Yes, it looks ridiculous and jars a little. Weirdly, I love it all the more for that.

Ultimately though, McLaren doesn't care what I think. Nor does it care about 99% of posts on here, and I think it shouldn't either. McLaren should be focusing its efforts on the people who buy such cars, whose tastes are going to be different from impecunious plebs such as me. wink

McLaren will not make a single penny by styling something that the average Ford Focus buyer approves of. Ford do that pretty adequately already. They're going to be a lot better off by ignoring the opinions of people who can't afford any of their wares.

Absolutely vile.

I like the old yank "flowing body lines and huge tail fins" look, but why oh why did the person who commisioned this ask McLaren?

I couldn't think of a more unsuitable car engineering company to produce a custom car with major influences from the 1950s.

Jag / Merc / RR / Bentley, yes, those who used to do proper coachbuilding and have a good chance of being able to pull off something spectacular.

What a wasted opportunity.

I just can't get over how putrid this car is!...
It's like eating something horrendous, and six months later you want to do it again.
I keep thinking... no, it can't be as bad as I think. I look again just to check, and then I want to cry for all of mankind.

I'm sure the release of this car must be unlawful in some way... crimes against humanity, public order offence, breach of the pleasant etc.

after looking at it for 10 mins and really wanting to dislike it ..... i can't. don't get me wrong, i wouldn't have one (even if i could afford it) but i think it has a certain elegance. kind of that classic auburn speedster/delahaye feel - which got me to thinking that maybe they would have been better off basing it on the convertible?

whatever. just a shame the interior doesn't really have the panache of the exterior - imagine how much cooler it would look with a cabin along the lines of a zonda or huayra.

Well said. I couldn't put it better myself.

I also think some people have a very blinkered view on what they think good design is.

I much prefer the different and unusual to the mainstream and boring. I am glad someone has the courage to commission something new instead of the pastiches that Ferrari are producing.

Now would the comments be the same if the headline said stunning instead of shocking?

Nevermind copyright, if I were BMW I'd be worried about the association with this monstrosity!

I think it's cool in a 'future retro' kinda way. Looks like the kinda thing Marylin Manson would drive.

Have you seen a BMW X1? It looks to me like each panel was designed by a separate person who didn't know what the others were doing and took a break half way through their own work forgetting what they did to start with.

If the front wheels were covered it wouldn't look so bad. Admittedly you wouldn't be able to steer any more but you could just have it picked up and rotated by a helicopter made of gold, or simply blown onto a new course by the gently exhaled breath of a thousand sweetly scented virgins in a van made of gold. Or just have all necessary roads straightened and everyone else turned into candles.

Reading a few comments, and it seems as tho a few people like this just because it is different. Well yes it is different but imo looks worse the more I see of it. And this is a McLaren......a McLaren FFS

An example of something very different and also cool/right kind of ugly:

Fully expecting many not to like this also boxedin

Far be it for me t try and introduce any perspective to this thread but:

  • it was commissioned by an individual customer, so the only person who has to like it, is him (or her)
  • Its to go on show at Pebble Beach. And this car oozes Pebble Beach. It is the car and the occasion to lift the company's profile in the US.

I really like this.

I know its never going to be production but as a one off its pretty special IMO.

But then i like the similar vintage customs and led-sleds from the US.
