Custom paint? Custom interior? Different wheels? Carbon parts?
An audi r8 v10 is just as improveable as any other car! You just need a lot more money!
Why be like every other r8TT on the roads?
EFA

An R8 is the only car I could condone modifying; just so it doesn't look like a big TT. Or an A6.

Or an A8, or ......

God Audi cars are st.

I had my 2.8 capri for years and was really attached to it but it had become too slow compared to newer stuff and wouldnt run on unleaded anymore.

So i stuck a 24v cosworth engine and cosworth box in it.

The trick is to where possible keep the standard parts that you replace, if you choose wisely you rarely 'loose' much money and sometimes make a bit. I mainly buy second hand stuff and referb it, when it finally becomes time to move on, mint condition discontinued items command a fairly hefty price tag. It's not uncommon to have people asking to be first in line if you ever decide to sell that part off of your car. Obviously this doesnt happen with Halfords spoilers and neons smile
'Loose'? As in loose change?

Or do you mean 'lose' as in lose money wink

That's the ticket! Love older cars with modern engines, you get the looks with the performance, whats not to like about it! pics?

How on earth can the op not appreciate modifying cars, that pretty much rules out the whole caterfield or z-cars market.

Op - get yourself to a track day and then you might understand what it's all about.

I modify my car, infact it is modified in such a way that you cannot buy any car from the factory that does what mine does

Is it money down the drain - nope, i enjoy it even if it is just a mondeo estate

Dear Op.

Having read your initial statement, I proceded to view your garage.

You claim to have a modified mondeo. You have attached a towbar and the obligitory tape on the bumper.

And no other cars that seem to function.

Maybe you will attempt to smart up that classic fiesta you have. Then you might decide that to go with the new restored looks, you'd prefer a better engine, so you drop in a larger ford engine. That could then break, and you decide you want something reliable and japanese, so in goes a 1.8 V-tec you found. Then you obviously need to uprate the suspension and brakes, you know, just to keep the car safe and usable.

Then you might decide it needs a front splitter, because its getting a bit light at speeds. You then decide the handling could do with a hand, because it is Oh so fast, it would be a shame to bin it round a corner, so on go some coilovers and you lower it by a few inches. You then decide your back isn't too comfortable so you go shopping for a new set of seats, and you come across a reasonably priced set of buckets. Aha you think, what a bargain, and they might go well with the look of my car.
Finally because the previous owner had a lot of rings on her fingers, the steering wheel is battered, so you replace it with a Momo wheel. You then decide that you would like to listen to CDs, so in goes a quality aftermarket CD player and all the other bits to let you listen to mozart a lot clearer.

Then you wake up one day, think st, "I've spend 6000 on this car. And its fking awesome!"

Better wheels, maybe something from ADV.1 or Vossen.

Better interior, the main thing that lets the R8 down is the seats, they look lifted straight from a A4.

Louder exhaust, R8's are far too quiet, I was driving one last week pretty hard and all I could hear was the F430 Scuderia in front of me.

I've only ever modded two of my cars.
The first was a Focus back in 2001. I changed the alloys and the rear lights. I thought it looked damn cool, and was good to have a car that looked different to the other tens of thousand Focus's (Foci?) on the roads. I guess I liked the attention that similar minded people would show. I was even part of the owners club at that time.

The other car I modded was a Seat Leon Cupra. Revo upgrade from 240bhp to 300bhp. Done purely for personal pleasure.

I guess it was mostly wasted money, although I sold the alloys and lights from the Focus but for about 25% of what I bought them.

Damn you're quick, I edited it to 300bhp as soon as I posted it!

this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_xgwiI25BM

An interview about the car - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJg0Qeethlw

Since then i have also done things like hooked my phone up to pull details from the cars ECU continually, rebuilt part of the dash to hold the nav and mobile phone.

A set of custom doorcards is being made from scratch at the moment to allow me to fit enough midbass

it is pointless, yes but i enjoy it

nope - i have a app called torque on my phone and it connects to the ecu via a bluetooth obd reader and this allows me to see all sorts of details as extra dials, quite handy

The only bit i do have a problem with is fking loud exhausts. They're just for narcissists and tts. And i'd love to see government legislation brought in that effectively bans all after-market exhausts.
Villages will be much happier places without Corsa's fitted with farty-pipes.
So for those cars where official parts are no longer made/very hard to get hold of, what is a person supposed to do then if their exhaust dies/needs replacing? Scrap the car?
Standardised government-approved exhaust replacements. Non-farty.
Jesus Christ man.

There's loud exhausts that sound crap, ie most 4 pots and builders' Transits.

There's loud exhausts that sound bloody superb, for example, cross-plane crank V8s, wailing straight sixes, roaring V10s and so on.

Have you heard a Monaro on it's factory exhaust? You'll not get the chance now because 90% have been changed for those aftermarket ones that you detest. They were whisper quiet as standard, extra silencers were fitted for a nanny-state UK market, as the Aussie ones and the Pontiac GTO were much better from a sound perspective.

You have no petrol in your veins sir, no soul.
Well it's either ban aftermarket exhausts or lower the decibel limit for all cars. And that then affects supercars and 'naturally' ear-pleasing cars.

Although i quite like the idea of finding Golf's, Corsa's, 306's etc and smacking the exhausts with a sledgehammer. Not just for the noise but also the reason that several times i think i'm hearing something interesting go past and turn (or dash) to see and it turns out to be a fking Focus with exhaust tomfoolery!

And no, Immortal's tend not to have souls. wink

I don't know why some men find other men a turn on. Nor do I understand why some people wish to spend money watching other men kick a ball about but each to their own and all that. Would be a boring world if we were all the same. As long as their aint doing anyone any harm why do you give a crap?

I'm sure the OP is referring to those who spend a huge amount doing what may be considered pointless styling changes - such as blanking a rear numberplate recess (filling & spraying it) and moving the plate lower, which is expensive to do for what it is. But it's all a matter of personal taste (or lack of!)

Personally I like to keep a car looking more or less standard, but there are always tweaks that can be done to any car to make them how they should have been from the factory. There are very few cars out there which don't have inherent design faults. Some of these can be small but irritating, others can be major. Fixing them improves the car, and gives you a good feeling as you've achieved something by doing it yourself.
