Anyone removed the power steering from a MK1? Its just a bit to much IMHO and I hear the non PS are better to drive

Can't comment on removing it from an existing setup, but when I looked into buying my old (PAS-equipped) car the consensus seemed to be that the factory's unassisted racks didn't really gain much.

I'm sure there are people on MX5Nutz who can give you chapter and verse on it, but the jist seemed to be that it was designed specifically as a PAS rack and the unassisted version was an afterthought to save costs on certain models.

I run a de-PASed PAS rack on my mk1. Steering is a bit heavy at parking speeds and pretty much perfect the rest of the time, pretty much like everything else without PAS.

If you want to try it just take the PAS belt off and drain the fluid. If you don't like it fill it up and put the belt back on.

The proper non-PAS rack is a different ratio apparently, and the MX5OC cared about that a lot. I'm happy with my car how it is.

I've driven one with a de-powered rack. It's not too bad once you are on the move but maneuvering is a bit of a chore. I've never driven a non-pas one but to be honest I don't have any issues with steering feel with power steering.

If you are that keen on no PAS i'd buy a proper non PAS rack rather than a depowered one.

Just my 2p though...

I've not had any issues with my de-PASed PAS rack, and it's been on there for 5 hard years of abuse, plus however long the previous owner had been driving it like that. I thought it might be rubbish, or wear out or something, but it's been fine.

I suppose insurance might be an issue - using a modified rack instead of either of the standard options. It's declared on my insurance but its a long list so it doesn't make any difference to me.

Having returned from a wedding this very morning and taken a long time to go through a very mild (just protracted) hangover, I can't say the idea of sitting in an Mx5 the day after is as appealing as a big barge.

But up until that point the MX5 fleet sounds like a much better idea. Reminds me of the Italian Job a bit, only more practical for the bride and the huge dress than a Mini or 3...

MX5 MK1 really is a great car, I only bought one for fun as everyone on here was always on about them, and now I make a bee line for it above my other cars, especially if the sun is out!

Silver being the worst colour for the mk1 unfortunately The other 3 colours being the best 3 for it

Regarding Rotechniks - I used them before for work - top guys, don't overcharge, seem to know their rotaries inside and out, would definitely recommend them!
