Once your car is sold, how do you answer the phone?
Discussion
If it were me, I'd greet the person, and when they enquired about the car, I would politely tell them it has been sold.
Not this guy I just phoned up though, he just answered "Sold!", and hung up. No hello or waiting to see what I was calling about! Straight to the point I guess, but how rude is that? His advert was a little dodgy though, that could have been a clue.
What other nice words have you encountered when ringing for a car?

Me - Hi I'm ringing about the M3 you have advertised for sale. I would like to view the car, but was just wondering if it comes with tax (fails to say in advert) and what sort of condition the bodywork is in?
Seller - I don't wanna answer loads of questions mate just come and see the car if you wanna buy it. Either that or stopping being a fking timewaster and bugger off!
FFS I was only getting an idea of the cars condition before I drive 300 miles to see it you tt! Your awful pictures and poorly written description give me a rather vague fking idea! The reason I want to see the car is only down to it being the exact spec I wanted and having FSH, but you can fk off now!
It's no wonder the car is still up for sale after 2 months!! .

On the upside you've probably dodged a bullet; if that's an example of their behaviour, how well do you think the car's been treated?Seller - I don't wanna answer loads of questions mate just come and see the car if you wanna buy it. Either that or stopping being a fking timewaster and bugger off!

It would have been worth it if you had used all above as a come back though, you do wonder whether people like that actually want to sell their car or if they are paying lipservice to their wifeSeller - I don't wanna answer loads of questions mate just come and see the car if you wanna buy it. After I sold the Accord I ended up having a full blown conversation with an enquirer as he then wanted to know what to look out for, issues, reliability, dealers etc. Couldn't get him off the phone and I didn't want to be rude so stuck with it. Figured it was my good deed for the day.
Never any need to be rude so I guess a simple, "sorry but it's sold, thank you" usually suffices.

I once went to see a Trans Am in London which was a pile of crap so I grabbed the local Exchange and Mart and saw a Camaro Z28 in Soho, spoke to the bloke, made my way into the Big Smoke and had a look at the car which was exactly what I wanted. He chatted about the car and then told me it was actually sold. I remained polite because what the hell, I can look round London anyway. Then he said that if the sale fell through, he'd be selling it.
He went on to claim he used to be in banking, took lots of cocaine as a leisure pastime in Hong Kong and that his son was terminally ill which was why he was selling the car to pay for the treatment. I have no idea if any of that was true but the following week, rang him and he still had the car and my "offer" was rejected as he needed the money for...yes, you know, makes an offer seem immoral.
Anyhow, I bought the car but the bloke was a complete freakazoid.
On the sold car point, I just remain polite and say the car is sold. If I have seen any similar cars locally for sale, I point them in that direction as I like to be helpful.

Well frankly that's a godsend he did react in that way you saved yourself a long drive and a potential arse raping due to poorly maintained/treated car. You could have called back 5 mins later using 141 waited until he answered then called him a then again I'd not bother
Personally when I buy a car I'm buying the person as well. If I don't like the chap or see he doesn't seem to take much care of things then I simply walk away. Maybe I miss out on some bargains or what not but it normally works and keeps me happy. If someone answered the phone like that I'd be thinking I'd got a lucky escape.
If someone called me and asked id just be polite as I fail to understand why you would be rude for no reason. Then again, there's some strange people about!

I start with "Hello"
Because unless you had a dedicated phone for the ad how would you know they are calling about the car ?
If you had a dedicated phone I'd leave the answerphone message that it had been sold and I'd turn it off.
My Mrs has a cheap orange PAYG mobile that she got specifically for Orange Wednesdays cinema tickets, so used that when she sold her bike which meant if the phone rang she knew it was about the bike. Once it was sold she set the answerphone message and left the phone turned off for a couple of weeks.Because unless you had a dedicated phone for the ad how would you know they are calling about the car ?

I went to buy a car off a guy in central london,
I looked around the car, took it for a drive and made him an offer - at which point he said it had been sold..
When asked why he hadn't told me that from the outset - he said "you never asked and I wanted to see if you'd give me more for it".
Cheeky .
Lesson learnt - I now ask if the car is under offer before setting out to see it

I am exactly the same. Rough cars and rough people usually go together.hman said:

Unreal. Jesus! Think I would have lost it a bit there and told him what a he was, not just to me but the other buyer too. Tosser. I looked around the car, took it for a drive and made him an offer - at which point he said it had been sold..

I was fuming at the time, so I picked up a copy of "Loot" (1995 y'see) and bought a more powerful version of the same car but a year older for less money about 10 miles away from the cock socket the same night.
I forgot all about that idiot after that.
Anyone remember the Bentley continental GT in the PH Classifieds a while back
was around £28k
but instead of taking it to a park or the countryside or even a stately home
they'd decided to take a photo of it in their sthole council house back garden beside the whirly line covered in primarks finest, uncut clumped grass and mildew covered kids toys
was on it for ages
if the seller is rough then then the car is also likely to have been raked to hell and back
