I bought a Playstation for the original Gran Turismo, I bought a PS2 for GT3 and a PS3 when GT5 came out.
I bought the original PS when it first came out, it took ages to find anywhere with stock. £500 if I remember?! Was a LOT back then for a console compared to the other choices at the time.I was disapointed with GT2, but soldiered on anyway.
Then upgraded to a PS2 for GT3, and it was the only game I ever bought or had interest in.
Same with GT4, bought a PS3 just for that and sold it after a few months due to lack of use.
Then got a new PS3 when GT5 eventually appeared. I preordered the collectors edition in the tin, and in the last year have probably spent about 2 hours playing it. I guess I'm getting old and loosing interest....

Ive owned them all, but for me, GT3 is the best, but that might be related to the mammoth sessions spent racing against my brother on it!
Definitely 3 was the best, it combined realism with fun. The later versions have had more emphasis on realism and seem to have forgotten about the whole 'being fun' part. As a Playstation owner I can't help but look at Forza and wonder what all the fuss is about over Gran Turismo, the next iteration has to improve on 5 because it was pants.Dan Trent said:
To be fair to Nick the interview was conducted through a translator and the responses to these set-ups don't always stand a more conventional we said, he said interview style report. Plus we wanted a bit more of a wide-ranging exploration of the culture GT has inspired.
But we're here to serve and I'll put the transcript up as a standalone piece in a wee while!

I will always have fond memories of the earlier games, but GT5 left me cold, Forza has taken the crown, GT5 was too little, too late in comparison.
Best memories were going over to get GT2 fromt he retail park over the road from work and getting a free T shirt which is still doing decorating duties even now.
The tuning side was a revelation after loads of racing games not offering anythign comparable.
Attending a work conference earlier this year and having a go on the "Driving Simulator" which was actually 2 PS2's linked, the first prize being a driving experience voucher, the game was GT3 and the object of the exercise was to set the best time on Trial Mountain in a race car, my years of wasted evenings payed off, I was four seconds quicker than the next quickest, I saw the other punters studying my technique and go from sawing at the wheel to small, careful inputs, but to no avail, nobody got close, I kept my gob shut about knowing it inside out

Love the GT series. GT3 was played weekly for ten years until GT5 was finally released. GT5, despite all its critisism, i find enjoyable enough but why can i not UPGRADE MY BRAKES!!! WFT Yamauchi??
Favourite moment of the series has gotta be the Tom's X540 Chaser drifting the entire 'Midfield' circuit in GT3. BRING BACK MIDFIELD!

Never got a PS3, but my mate had one with the Prologue edition of GT5. He was consistently about 10% quicker than me on a range of cars and circuits. For the NSX (which I drive in real life) I was routinely significantly quicker than him. Then slower again when we changed cars.
Haven't played the full version following the lukewarm reaction but there's definitely something to it being realistic.

I can't agree with the negativity levelled at GT5 - To me it's just epic, I don't want the GT formula to change too much as it progresses and I certainly don't want it to head in a Forza direction, bigger and better is all I really want. Even a marginally more 'arcade' stance would stop me buying it.
There are plenty of loose arcade racers out there, I want what GT was always intended to be: A car/driving simulator. I've played GT5 at least a few hours a week ever since it came out - I can't think of a single other game that i've played so consistently for almost two years. The regularly updated 'Seasonal events's really helps keep it fresh and addictive for me.
I agree with all that. It could be expanded with more cars, tracks and races, but it should not try to emulate all the arcade races that are available for those who just want 'fun'.There are plenty of loose arcade racers out there, I want what GT was always intended to be: A car/driving simulator. I was in my early 30's when I was introduced to GT2. I had not taken much interest in video games before that. Since then, far too many hours of my life has been wasted in Gran Turismo world since.
I can't say my choice of cars has been influenced by the game (I had already owned an Elise, MX-5 and a Cappucino when I first played it), but if I'd spent fewer late nights playing it, I might have been able to afford that 911 by now.

Completely agree about 3 being the pinnacle. I was left cold by 4 and 5. In fact I switched to FM3 mostly, despite disliking the Xbox controller for driving sims. Don't game much any more, keep meaning to pick up FM4 though.
FM4 is great, get it....very fast and slick.i got it new about a month ago for £26, well worth it
I think some people are a little too rash in judging the realism of GT5 vs Forza. The earlier incarnations of GT struggled a little, but play GT5 with a decent steering wheel/pedal set-up (e.g. Logitech G27) and it really comes alive - the detail in the feedback through the wheel is incredible, and totally missed when using a normal controller. Certainly a world better than the shoddy set-up at the Porsche Sunday Service, although that was probably down to poor calibration (e.g off-centre steering, brakes didn't come on until 2/3 travel) I agree it's better on Xbox with the controller compared to the PS3 one. And for reference, this is comparing to GTR2, which is a proper sim IMO.

Definitely 3 was the best, it combined realism with fun. TStill a brilliant game though, I practically destroyed my first PS2 due to overplaying GT3. Got a slimline PS2 when GT4 came out but it never really captured me the way the earlier games did and 5 is just a no go.
Can't say I've ever liked any of the gt series and I had an extensive play of them all ending with trading them in after a week or two.Physics wise i'd say forza trumps gt.Also the small number of premium cars in gt5 was a let down I'd much rather they had focused having more premium cars vs more models of skyline or your mums micra... Which is probally why Im much more a fan of forza's formula of releasing car packs of notable cars
Had them all, loved GT3 the most!
But 5 was a massive dissapointment... it probably wouldnt have been if Forza didnt exist, but in the time it took to launch GT5, almost 3 versions of Forza were made. And Forza 4 is just in another league.
My biggest complaint with GT5 is that they still seem to be recording the cars sound effects through hoovers.

It is disappointing, when so many other games do such a great job, and given how well they do everything else. I''m tempted to pick up an XBox to play Forza during the inevitable lengthy wait for GT6.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
