Never bought any game or console. Tried plying some game once in an arcade and on a friend's machine. Managed about half a lap on both. Seems so far removed from the real thing yet some great drivers have come from games. Am I missing something?

Oooo, am I famous now? hehe

No but seriously, if it wasn't for Gran Turismo, I wouldn't of known what an Impreza was. As a result I got into the JDM scene big time and have pretty much owned Jap motors since passing my test apart from the odd euro piece of metal. Owning an STi Type R was definetely the highlight of my driving career so far. It done everything so well and I loved the attention it got, whether it was an appreciative nod from an ex-petrol head, or the kids that would crowd round it when picking my cousin up from school, and how they would scream in excitement when I would rev it making the anti-lag engage. biggrin

I miss that car dearly. I am still on the hunt for a P1 or WR5, but am swaying towards my dream car......Cosworth. wink

Thanks for the mention btw!

Had them all, loved GT3 the most!
But 5 was a massive dissapointment... it probably wouldnt have been if Forza didnt exist, but in the time it took to launch GT5, almost 3 versions of Forza were made. And Forza 4 is just in another league.

My biggest complaint with GT5 is that they still seem to be recording the cars sound effects through hoovers.
Agree on the sounds... Best game atleast on console for sounds is nfs:hot persuit on the 360 far from a sim but if EA can do it for an arcade racer why can't others?

Have fond memories of GT on my PS, at Uni, lots of head to head battles with my Flatmates

Awsome game, one of the best driving games ever

GT on PS2 was good fun too, but nothing will beat GT on the PS one in my mind, it was the driving game of my age so to speak, much like Street Fighter 2 was the game of my secondary School Days

Bought a ps3 only because of GT5,played since GT1 for me the best is GT4,i even know people who bought a car based on Gran Turismo.

Times have changed now Gt may not be the best console racing/simulator game anymore, hopefully Kaz said that in GT6 he will try something else,a story mode would be great imo but will be hated to death by hardcore fans as always when changes happen.

I think I owned them all except for GT5. By that time I'd moved onto pc sims like GTR2 and netKar Pro which were far superior. My fave was GT2 because of the huge amount of interesting 2nd hand cars you could buy, I think I remember GT3 being the weakest in the series? strange it seems a popular favourite.
Some memories:
Drifting RUF 911's (maybe that was GT3?)
Buying the same two tone colour mk1 MR2 as I owned in real life and spinning it constantly, that car took some real learning in GT.
Being surprised at what a short 1st gear all the lotus elise's had.
finding out that an Evo (6?) RS was the best bang for buck ever created in the history or the world.
taking on the single computer controlled GT40 at that pretend Italian street circuit in an Elan Sprint and holding it off to win 50% of the time (but only if it spawned at the back of the grid) even though it would eat you down the long straight.....
Good times! made me a big JDM fan too. I've owned a boxster but it wasn't as much fun as my Evo 9 or DC2R. It's JDM from here on in!

A thought - how about a Gran Turismo equivalent for motorbikes?

There are so many bikes out there, both past and present, so many circuits from the Isle of Man TT and Northwest 200 to the Superbikes and MotorGP circuits, scrambler rallies, the Dakar, the X-games and so on.

It'd be great to see a Gran Turismo for bikers.

Polyphony Digital did make a bike game using the same engine etc. as GT. Wasn't a big success as I recall.

Good idea but I think the big issue is that on a game you can't simulate the leaning or fore/aft movements that are part of riding a bike whereas you can (sort of) reproduce all the inputs of car driving.

I see what you're getting at, but I reckon you could do something using the little joystick-thumb-rocker things on the Playstation controller, or plug in a more specialised joystick.

There used to be plenty of flightsim-joysticks with separate hand-throttles that would have been ideal for a bike game. Throttle for the, well, throttle, movement of the joystick mimics the rider's body, finger-trigger is gear up, thumb trigger is gear down and another button on the base of the stick could be the brakes (could even have separate front and rear).

On the Playstation controller, the thumb-rocker could be the movement of the rider's body, and the four buttons could handle accelerator, brakes, gear up and gear down.

One of my favourite reads ever on Pistonheads, really enjoyed it and the nostalgia of the comments underneath.

We had GT1 at uni on an original playstation in our house share, and Trial Mountain caused many an argument! Scratch and sniff disc for the win...

My MX5 and RX7 ownership was inspired by the game, no doubt. I too moved on to Forza, but my fond memories are of Pikes Peak on the original PS effort smile

Ive owned them all, but for me, GT3 is the best, but that might be related to the mammoth sessions spent racing against my brother on it!
Definitely 3 was the best, it combined realism with fun. The later versions have had more emphasis on realism and seem to have forgotten about the whole 'being fun' part. As a Playstation owner I can't help but look at Forza and wonder what all the fuss is about over Gran Turismo, the next iteration has to improve on 5 because it was pants.
^ What he said
I can remember 'building' a mental, race-spec Griff 500. IIRC one of the race upgrades saw a Truscan racer-type rear end - a sort of hybrid, which looked very cool. The car was very quick but almost insanely difficult to drive and, as I can attest, very close to the truth!

Pedant mode on:

There's no such thing as a Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type R V2. The 3 door didnt exist until V3.

...and we couldnt buy WRXs in 1998 here either as they were Turbo 2000s. It was late 2000/01 before we had a car called that in the showrooms.

Pedant mode off.

I'll be needing this, thanks getmecoat

For those that say the physics of GT5 are bad, have you tried it with a steering wheel? I have a Logitech G25 (the G27 is even better) and find the feedback and "feel" of the car to be absolutely superb. It's easily the most realistic driving experience i've yet found on any console. Driving in the wet the car feels like it's on tip-toes, just like the real thing. The way it behaves with understeer/oversteer and the tricky bit in the middle is absolutely spot on!

Seriously. Give it a go.

I remember getting a copy of the (Japanese only, at that point) game in 1998, billed as "the real driving simulator" I was half expecting traffic lights and old ladies in Austin Princesses. Once I had found my way on to the track, past the licenses (I don't read Japanese...) my eyes were opened, and I was hooked. Even if I was driving something like a Nissan Micra with uprated driveshafts and the door cards chucked out.

When the english version came out, it made a lot more sense (See also: Metal Gear Solid).

Random: The Most Un-PH Driving Game Ever?

I figure it's a tie between TOKYO BUS DRIVER and PENN & TELLERS DESERT BUS

I could beat anybody around the Trial mountain circuit whilst driving a Clio V6.
I'll take you up on that, it's been about 10 years since I drove it but I can still close my eyes and visualise a lap of TM! Those first uphill bends into the rocks are genius.

Might have to be the Tommy's Supra though, or maybe Speed 12 wink

The fact that the Speed 12 was almost undrivable without hours of practice, and the tractor-like sound it made, might just be what sealed GT's place in my heart.

I once played Tourist Trophy, lots of bikes I knew nothing about but the same GT tracks. I don't think it was far from what you describe in terms of controls, certainly there were separate buttons for front and back brakes, I found it really hard getting the braking right, pretty sure you could shift your weight fore/aft too. However this was a long time ago and I'm struggling to recall the finer details. I can't remember if you could 'fall off', for example.

I was never really into playing video games. my younger Brother was though, and I remember being up late one evening and deciding to have play around with his GT game (the first one)......
Discovered the 'Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V GSR' it was silver and I did a little 'light' modifying. Put it on some time trial track and got completely addicted to the unique way it handled and gripped. putting a good solid couple of hours into eeking out the very best lap time i could.

Forward a couple of years and after experiencing the worst customer service i have ever experienced at a certain East Sussex BMW specialist, I happened to be driving past the local Mitsubishi Dealership - And there, on display was a Silver EVO V GSR. Freshly imported and sold with a full Red Zebra Warranty I had to have it.

I tuned it to pretty much the exact same spec as that virtual car I spend the night hooning around in, and immediately recalled that unique way it gripped and handled.

Exactly. The sound is awful.
The game has moved on. Forza is the daddy. After 5GTs and 3 PS I've had it.
