Is that not for a different thread?
I think it was aimed at the comment that people buy the Cayman to say they have a PorscheFWIW I have been looking at these recently so its an interesting read
A lot of reading I have done seems to suggest the 3.0 Si is the better car

After reading Harris's views and numerous similar reports over the years about the ability of the car to understeer I think that these overpriced, cramped and poorly packaged cars (with 23mph) just do not offer any advantage over a good M3 E46 or an early 997.
Overpriced? Really? In 2008 I bought a AUC pretty much spec loaded Z4MR with 23k for just over 22K ......I might get at least 10K - maybe 12k now... so 10-12K depreciation in four years and 50k of M driven miles.... 3K p.a. depreciation seriously WTF do you want? I assume your '23mph' means 23 mpg ... so how do you imagine the 3.2 engine in the M3 (heavier) is going to give you more mpg? what you looking for 40+mpg... shheeshh!
Poorly packaged ... they are two seaters... so WTF? They fit two people and set of golf clubs (shock, horror) and bags for a holiday..... if I want to take the kitchen sink I'll take the ML!

I'm with CH on this one. I've had a 3.0 Z4C, a Z4MC a standard e46 M3 and an e46 CS. The e46s were better in almost every respect than the MC: more comfortable, more predictable when pressing on, better built, sounded better, better ride, more practical. I enjoyed the Z4M, for a time, but wouldn't have another, especially when a CS can be had for the same (or less) cash.
The only point I really take issue with CH on is the styling - I think they look ace.
Your current wheels display such excellent taste that I cannot take issue with anything you say!The only point I really take issue with CH on is the styling - I think they look ace.
I've done 1400 miles in mine in the last two weeks through France, Italy and Switzerland. Absolutely brilliant. Now that's a proper M car!
I don’t agree – for the money you can pick one up for these days it’s a hugely fast car and with the low driving position and that engine it feels special to drive. While e46 Ms are great cars they don’t have that same sense of occasion for me. In addition the z4m is a proper low slung 2 seater and is just a lot more interesting (and rarer) shape.
Initially it can seem like a tricky car to drive but over time you get more confident with it and learn how to drive it properly which is satisfying when you know how. As has been mentioned it definitely worth ditching the original out-of-date (even at the time) continentals for ps2s or similar - that alone makes a big difference.

Wow, out of production for getting on for 4 years and still 5 pages of comments....

There's only 500 or so of us anyway, so let us enjoy our flawed little beasts because enjoy them we do. If you don't get it then fine, move on and join the Ubiquitous Army.

you need to spend a couple of thousand miles in these things before you pass judgement, in my opinion.
Oh I agree. But I did about 9,000 miles in mine over 11 months and still thought the e46 M3 was the better car. It'd be boring if we all liked the same stuff though!
I agree completely with Chris on this.
The sum of the parts doesn't add up and what on paper appears awesome isn't. That is what let's it down. As an example, bmw actually changed the electric steering to a hydraulic one so that it could be more feelsome yet bewilderingly under-deliver on that very aspect is symbolic of the car; it just doesn't live up to it's billing.
Yes. I owned one for 6 months and tried very hard to love it as I did my z3mc (which i kept for 4 years). It was impossible and a test drive of the cayman was the final nail in the coffin.

Just goes to show - different strokes; I test drove the cayman S and found it deeply unrewarding, sterile and lifeless by comparison. The Z4M thrums into life the minute you start it, and has me grinning like a schoolgirl even after using it every day as a daily commuter for more than 2 years. The Cayman left me utterly cold.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
