Why couldn't they just leave it as a Fiero?.

They're rare and pretty cool in their own way.
No, because they're st.They (IMO) look great in stock trim. The latter GT with the buttresses looks sporty and fast even today. Although I'm more a fan of the notchback Formula model.
The V6 was pretty nippy in it's day offering up comparable performance to the supercharged MR2. And while they aren't the sharpest handling car in the world, they aren't exactly bad handlers either.
Not too mention pretty frugal on fuel, the 2.5 was rated at nearly 40mpg (US gallons) way back in 1984!
Fiberglass body and galvanized chassis mean no rust either. And the engine bay is big enough and designed to take either the latter 3.8 DOHC V6 or a SBC V8.

Who actually has the balls/stupidity to drive a repo/copy/fake, I've never actually seen one in the flesh.
About 6 months ago I saw an either fake or very badly repaired Trans-am at Leicester Forest services.See fake Focus RSs all the time, some with the dead-give-away rear drums
