My submission for favourite engine sound is the fabulous Busso engine in the Alfa 147 and 156 GTAs...

360CS, 355, M3 CSL, 996 GT3 after 5.5k rpm for me are the best sounding cars ever made.

Love Ferrari V8's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fIF6Nh7gCo Go to 20 secs, the way it changes the exhaust sound is awesome.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALFvwy25P_4 Go to 2:54, simply one of the greatest noise I've ever heard.

My personal preference has always been split by exhaust noise and induction noise, and is as follows:

Best exhaust noise: Ferrari F355 (the way it just sings is glorious)

Best induction noise: McLaren F1 (angry DTM-style induction overlayed with V12 wailing capabilities).

Slightly o/t but Bike magazine gave away a CD on the cover a few years ago with the sounds of an exclectic collection of bikes, both static and fly-by.
It was interesting to work out what you liked the sound of and then see what it was - home classics and pretty humdrum machinery (TDM900) scored very well.

I wonder which non-exotic cars would sound good if you didn't know what they were?

F355 with Tubi is the ugly sister to the F355 with Capristo

Sorry but your all wrong. Mazda 797B at Le Mans or any triple rotary such as the Cosmos is the best sounding engine.

Another (terribly biased) vote for the M3 CSL here smile Have never heard an engine sound that can change so much over its rev-range

(Not me, still haven't got my Go-Pro working properly frown)

Pedantic hat but they have 380bhp, not 400bhp.
Sounds amazing with the Capristo. Second only to some of the Carrera GT sounds.

The flat plane crank Ferraris always sound like chainsaws to me - but the one in the video did sound as good as any I've heard. But few if any road cars sound that good- if you want noise you need racers.Try Matra MS120, Ferrari 512 and - a personal favourite the Larousse Lamborghini GP car of early 90s. Or a smallblock Chevy in race tune.

They are all epic, but not sure it tops the 3 cylinder kia Picanto with rust pea shooter exhaust. Of note, is it me or does natural aspirated sound better than any turbo???

Best youtube clip I heard was a V6 Alfa Romeo with a full Unicorse system. Sounds like the Countach in Cannonball run! biggrin

No mention of the 6R4? They have to be up there in the all time best sounding cars.

The 355 definately sounds nice, but the ultimate sound for me has to be the F50
