BRM v16 - Into the Red (which I think this soundtrack is from) was where I first heard it - sounded like a long lost dinosaur from the Pleistocene era

Personally I get a bit excited about a very cammy Crossflow with twin Webers.

But the most enigmatic exhaust I ever had was on a bonkers Fiat 500 (the old one). Jimmy DiCarlo built it for me, it had some crazy carb and an exhaust that was astounding. The nearest I've found is this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLeBxZczScQ

Had to sell the car to a chap on the Isle of Mann. Would love to own it again.

As someone else said previously, you're all wrong. The best exhaust sound is from the 787B race car.

One aspect of this that stands-out is how clever these new exhaust valves are: cars of this type are WAY nosier than they used to be. I had a 575M and it was mostly silent: no trick exhaust valves, just a pretty muted sound. Likewise a 512TR: great noise quality, but compared to modern Fandangos, not much volume.

With better breathing apparatus, the Boxer 12 sounds glorious

Bad thread this. Now want an early 355, and another 512TR.

If we're allowed race cars, there's two I want to bring up:

2000 Mclaren MP4-15

A unique sound produced by the Ilmor V10

And the ultimate screamer:

2004 BAR Honda 006

biggrin

Just watched the 355 video as at work, and it sounds like an early '90's Honda CBR250 at 18,000 RPM. Good noise, but not all that exotic.

The Alfa with the Unicorse system trumps it, IMO.

Countach(with flames)

Perhaps the PHer who owns (or used to own it) can indicate what exhaust system is... hehe

What was the 512 like Chris. This is a car I plan to own at some point in the near future (if they don't keep creeping up in price)

I saw one running at Shelsley Walsh, very briefly and not all that happily - not sure how many of those 16 tiny cylinders were actually involved - and it sounded sublime.

Sorry to be the bearer of crushing news, but real ones also don't have 28 forward gears (as would appear from the sound track). It's not bad though is it...?

My submission for favourite engine sound is the fabulous Busso engine in the Alfa 147 and 156 GTAs...

Had 2 155 V6s and my old man had a 75 V6 new and a 155 V6 new so I can't argue. The engine looks fabulous as well !!!

I'd agree with you there Chris, 355 is a beaut, especially with that Tubi on it.

Personally, I get excited by the metalic intake sound of the M3 CSL.

The late 575s (HGTC and Superamerica) sound better as they have a different exhaust.

The Boxer engined racing Ferraris sound epic 312PB mmmmm.

Everything posted so far sounds pansy compared to the Jag XFR used for Bonneville:

http://youtu.be/fa5ivpJwmIQ

It sounds like a Stuka on the intake and a Nascar on the exhaust. What's not to like?

McLaren MP4-12C doesn't get much love for it's noise but the first 30 seconds of this vid melted my headphones.
