Round here X5 drivers in general are young ish lads covered in bling, track suits and baseball caps with black windows and LED lights for no apparant reason stuck in odd locations? All ages of X5 seem to be "chaved up" here.
Strange, I'd maybe have said that about the original X5, but the latest model I don't think I've even seen any with ridiculous aftermarket wheels - most I see are driven by a different type of person who would have bought the original X5, but now maybe opts for an X6 or Q7.All just based on what I've noticed of course.
The latest X5 is what I'd buy if I wanted a large SUV, I think it looks the classiest, and that's over an ML or GL and I'm a bit of a Merc fanboy!

Had all this on a company disco 3. Brothers privately owned (just sold) the same... Loan disco 3 when mine being fixed broke down. Not good! In my experience German of Jap, sure I will be shot down but their the only cars to have proved reliable

My money would be Touareg, to be different, for VW reliability and re-sale values. Land Rover have been hit hard with poor feedback and reliability issues, just why my brother has just sold his disco 3. Even at 48000 miles hes shelling out on it monthly. Electrics, suspension and recently water entry everywhere. Its 1 owner, looked after etc etc but its doing its best to finish his finances! A guy 2 doors up also has a disco 3, well usually he does when the TH White loan car isnt on his drive!
Yet my D3 - with 100k miles more than your brother's - soldiers on with only normal servicing and the occasional replacement. In any case, the D4 is much better built than the D3. It doesn't drive as well as an X5, and consumes a lot more fuel, but as an all-round ownership proposition, it'd be the one I'd go for. Almost nothing's at good at wafting away a huge number of miles than a Disco - I've done several thousand-mile-plus days and still been fine, which only my XC90's ever come close to doing.

Slightly biased but I'd go for the D4. For me it has a better image than the X5 (and RRS etc) and despite its size I don't feel too self-conscious driving it around. The 12MY with 255bhp and 8 speed auto is a very refined car and although the BMW is said to handle better, for me, a car like this is for wafting in and the Discovery is exceptional at that.
I agree the disco is more 'wafty' but after looking on the forums the discovery seems to have lots of niggles. Q7 is too long, do they do a touareg 7 seater? The OH will drive it more, will hardly do any off road work and at the moment all the kids are aged under 12. I'm edging towards the X5 at the moment due to reliability and fuel consumption. jonnynine11 said:

Just make sure you get the kids to try out the 3rd row and if it's all good then go for it. Great car, you will love it.jonnynine11 said:

Our families experinces of a Disco3 after 5 years and 84,000 miles? Two EGR valves ( only one went, but we replaced both,)sticking petrol flap and door lock. That's it.
The only car it will be replaced with is a Disco4.

Oh, and whilst its a 4x4, the furthest it will go off road without getting stuck is up a kerb.

I need a seven seater for getting the family around, currently have a 997, BMW 1 series and VW transporter kombi for work. The Porsche and BMW are going to go and be replaced with an X5 or disco4. Just wondering what your opinions are on these, it will be a 2011 model and a keeper, the discoveries seem to have lots of faults not so many on the X5. Give me your views please.
Out of these two I'd opt for the D4 easy. Although I daresay the X5 is faster and more car like.. but then I'd rather just have a car if that's the case. That said, how many people do you actually need to transport? I'm guessing this current role is being filled by the 1 Series?
D4 all day for me too. Both the D3 we had and the D4 have been totally reliable unlike all my previous BMWs but then the most reliable car I ever owned was an Alfa 147GTA.
The D4 is no sports car but is probably one of the most comfortable vehicles on sale today. And they go anywhere.

I owned an 06/56 D3 for 4 years & 42k miles and other than standard servicing, it only needed a parking sensor. It was replaced by a D4 28 months ago and its been faultless.
Like many others, I know people who have experienced issues with their X5's, Toerags, GL's, XC90'setc. In fact the chap next door replaced his wife's XC90 with a white Q7 and that has gone through a set of tyres after 6000 miles of school runs. The forums suggest that every motor manufacturer has issues with its products. Whilst LR D3's had their recognised issues, the D4 is known to be much more reliable. Personally, I wish my Cayenne and B7 RS4 had been as reliable as my Discovery's have.
When it was time to change our D3, we considered everything on the market and shortlisted the X5 and D4. We opted for the D4 due to it's spaciousness, practicality, ride quality, Standard equipment (HSE), good previous experience with the D3 and dealer, residual values and bad weather ability. With regard to fuel consumption, the research we did suggested that there was a positive difference in favour of the X5 however, owners we know reported an average around town consumption of 24-26MPG (the disco returns 23-24) and 32- 33 on a motorway run at legal speeds. Our D4 averages 30.
