Thanks guys. I was just concerned that they might not send out the new licence until they get the old one.
My OH just renewed her licence. We waited to receive the new one before returning the old one, cut up.
( A bit late response for you OP, but might help someone?)

Also, the new one came through in about 3 working days from application online. Good service!

Good service - nice you don't need to scan a photo

Went online to do mine yesterday.

Couldn't do it because my passport is over 5 years old. By one day!!

Damn. Should have done it over the weekend.

Genuine question.

Does having the old paper only licence really cause issues hiring a car in the US, as surely one cannot get any better photo id than your passport which as a UK resident/citizen travelling to the US one would presumably have on ones person?
Went to Florida in May and no problem at all.
Remember, the paper bit is the licence. The new fangled photo bit isn't - you would still have to present the paper bit too.

I was suprised to find my card is out of date. I passed my test in November 2002 so expected it to be November 2012 I would have to update it.

Turns out they amended the date on the card when I got an SP30 a few years back! Nothing through the post letting me know I needed renewing or anything. I only found out because the bank wouldnt accept it as ID when I needed to draw money out to buy a car.

EH!!

What was their reason for reducing the 10 year photo date ?

It does not make sense to me

My wife only gets 3 years on hers due to medical reasons and the DVLA just took over 6 months to renew her licence. No explanation whatsoever for it taking so long and no reason behind it. All she had was a letter saying it was fine to drive, but unable to rent cars or anything needing a licence in the meantime.

What's the penalty if you don't renew it? I have the renewal letter I just forgot to do it, it's a month out of date.
I didn't realise mine was out of date until I moved and tried to change the address. They just wrote back and asked me to renew it.

These photo licences are pain when you have to renew every 10 years, at your own expense, makes me glad I've still got a paper one that lasts me till I'm 70 odd, as long as I don't move house.
Or get caught being naughty and made to re-apply, (sigh)

Is it just the photo that is out of date though? The date on the back shows mine is still valid until I am 70.

(Mines only 5 months out of date...I waited as I was moving house and then forgot!)

The legal right to drive the categories on the licence does no change if the photo becomes out of date but the licence itself is not valid so a charge of driving without a valid licence can be brought

Its like having a car which has all the correct paperwork etc but the tax disc is not diplayed

Thats my understanding of the law but am prepared to be educated
