Still changing my mind...what's the consensus on an e61 550i manual, 1 owner, 60k miles, full bmw sh with an ins 2 just completed for £12k...assuming it all checks out.

Cheers

That particular one adds up, and was on my radar for a while.

But I'm recently a bit meh over the E61 after spotting an identical 530d in the street and noting to self how dated they were starting to look.

Surely we buy cars like that to do a job? In that case, the 5 pot Mondeo Titanium (yawn) where my money went was at least current, newer, half the miles, half the price, has something called ride quality, probably won't be far off as quickmonce mapped, and will do the job equally as well. Even if we're not comparing eggs wit eggs.
I much prefer the look of my e39 to the e61 and pefer the interior,...But...V8...and Spanish.

Chaps, I've been tasked at work with replacing our engineering vehicle.

It's a Volvo V70 D5 AWD. Work have said can be new / leased or bought outright nearly new.

Which would be cheaper / better deal.

Replacement must be diesel, must be estate, bluetooth and xenons are highly desirable.

I've spec'd a new 320d m-sport @ £33k. A4 is £32k, C class is £32k, Vovle is 28k + options, Octavia VRS is £25k.

You can get an old shape (E91?) 320d kitted out with 5k miles for £25k
It's almost a meme, but what about a Yeti? Bluetooth/satnav kit is excellent.
yes

Yeti or if it's too small a Octavia vRS Estate.

So Saturday is the day to collect my turbo nutter estate.
Just in time as we've had a decent offer on the house.

Looks good to me - reasonable spec, though check that the panoramic sunroof works and that the under-floor of the boot isn't damp. I'm assuming it's the silver grey one on Auto Trader at SMA Car Sales.

It's a May 2006 car so just into the £475 per year road tax bracket, which is a shame. The rear wiper looks broken in the photos but it may just be that it's been moved when the glass was open and not re-engaged the drive pin.

That is the one, I had a feeling it would just slip in to the expensive tax bracket and had been reading about the leakage issues with the sunroof drain pipes so will check that thoroughly. I think they've had it for a while and it disappeared from autotrader a while ago only to appear again earlier this week.

Spoke to them earlier this week and they mentioned something about a height adjustment warning coming up and it being in BMW to sort it.

When I spoke to them again yesterday they said Sytners had given it a full ins 2 and replaced a control module which sounds to me like it could be boot leakage related but I could be barking up the wrong tree.

Off to Spain for the weekend but will try and get to have a poke around it on Monday afternoon when I get back.

The V70 is a fair bit bigger than a 320 or A4. Might be a problem if you are filling it to the roof with "engineering stuff".
Also, is the AWD bit important? A 320 MSport with low ground clearance and RWD might not be ideal replacement.

What about an Octavia Scout?

Mondeo estate, surely? Huuuuuge load area, great to punt about and certainly no second class citizen in the aesthetic camp either.

This would be my thought, providing it doesn't need the extra group clearance and AWD. I had a poke around one last year, and they are indeed massive.

My 545 has a panoramic sunroof and doesn't appear ever to have leaked, so make a precautionary check rather than assuming it's been leaking. Height adjustment must be the self-levelling suspension; I believe it's the Idrive and PDC modules which get wet so probably unrelated.

It shouldn't have had an Insp II since the E60 is on condition based servicing, which means it doesn't use the old Oil/Insp I/Oil/Insp II pattern.

I'd get a BMW warranty on it; if it's just under 60k miles then it's cheaper than just over, but either way it's worth having.

Mondy estates have been the choice of my bro in law for the last decade to punt around in as his work and home motor. Civil engineer building roads n bridges, so car always full of work gear. They come loaded to the gunnels with all the extras goodies, Ford always have a deal available, acres of space, comfortable, reliable and plenty of pace to punt down to France.

Sorry.
I'm 100% with you on this Loon. I will always prefer a manual.

I've done lots of miles in what are widely regarded as the 'best' dual clutch 'boxes - 458, 12C, 991. They're very impressive, technically, but all 3 of those cars lose a vital part of the driving experience for me. The manual 991 i drove put that back in for me.

I've bleated on about it enough I know, but the new Exige V6S is a stunning example of what a modern sports car should be. Light, direct, supple, with a delicious manual shift. In a few miles I felt more connected with it than I did in 200 with the McLaren.

I have no issue with Porsche fitting the PDK to the new GT3, I just really really hope that it's an option, not forced upon us.

Right. That's that sorted then. (I saw an ad for a Mondeo 'Business Edition' this morning. Such monikers often offer excellent VfM)

To me the Ford Mondeo is the fish and chips of the motor industry. It does the job, fills you up and, if you find a good one, a damn site better than most restaurants (restaurants in this case being premium offerings)

We did the ring and back in 48 hours in a Mondy to pick up my broken car. It went to the ring, did a few laps, we even had a kip in it. Great thing.
