Well I wasn't really being too specific. I think anything big and saloon made by Rover in the last 30 years has a bit of a stigma attached. With the exception of the SD1, which was a hatch...
I think such a stigma only appeals to certain people, everyone else is just a lot more sensible. Lots of people (myself included) like Rovers and see them for the good cars they actually are.300bhp/ton said:

I can't imagine what's so difficult about a Clio 172 with a single sprog? Ok having to reach past folded down front seats isn't ideal, but it's far from a major problem and the boot should be large enough for one sprogs stuff? My sister in law has a MINI with two little lads and copes fine, and my Fiat Coupe was never an issue with my daughter.

Later is not necessarily better with the 75 and MG. Lots of de-contenting and reducing standards toward the end as Rover looked for every £ it could squeeze out of the cars.http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.p...

I have often wondered why men who have one child suddenly decide that they need a massive car to cope with it.
At the very least, I wonder is it really worth changing cars just to get something with two more doors? For the love of the car, just lean into it...
Hee hee, for the first time in my life I can play this card.....At the very least, I wonder is it really worth changing cars just to get something with two more doors? For the love of the car, just lean into it...
You dont have kids do you?
A big car just makes life so much easier! I rarely put our baby in the clio as you have to have the front seat pushed right forward for it to fit.
The boot will just take the pram. We couldnt fit a travel cot in the clio either so going away in it wasnt an option.
When my 172 finally falls to bits or gives me a big bill. I'll chop it in for a 5 series estate!
I sold my Tuscan in order to fund a bigger house for a family.
Replaced it with a ZS 180 hatch back and got to say I am very impressed!
Engine is very smooth and has a nice sound plus a good amount of torque. With a good induction kit you can get a reasonable power increase (they fitted the 2.5 with the same throttle intake as the Rover 2.0).
Loads of room inside plus a good sized boot, managed to fit 4 adults in plus a load of shopping (my wife and her friends).
Chassis is very good, shares a lot of honda parts underneath and you can really throw it into bends, I would go as far as saying that it gives you a lot more confidence than my TVR did!
When Tiff test drove one back in 2002 he said it was the best front wheel drived car he had driven to date and this was backed up by a lot of car reviews as well.

Loads of cars which are totally unsuitable for the OP
Lovely that you went to such effort.Shame you missed the bit about getting rid fo the Clio for a new baby and needing 37 mpg!

Bit of haggling should get close.
Only 1 owner. Private sale. Just serviced. Low mileage, 4wd, turbo, lots of space for kids stuff. Job done.
Subaru Impreza 2.0 WRX 4WD 5dr [SR] Sportwagon 2002
One owner ( I am the first); 36,600 miles; just had a Subaru service; full Subaru service history; Prodrive Performance Pack, but otherwise unmodified; GPS tracker; very good condition and much loved, but not being used much, now that we have a Legacy estate (hence sale). £3,650
The OP needs 37 ish mpg and you suggest an Impreza turbo?Only 1 owner. Private sale. Just serviced. Low mileage, 4wd, turbo, lots of space for kids stuff. Job done.

If you're into cars and want something fun and/or interesting on a budget with sensible insurance premiums take a look at classics, modified classics and kit cars. You'll find little else to compete with it.
If you want more modern and mainstream then it might be worth looking at less obvious cars from a bigger class. When looking earlier this year/late last year. A 2.4 Audi A6 was no more expensive to insure for a new driver than an old diesel Fiesta was.
On this basis it wouldn't surprise me if a 5 Series BMW is cheaper to insure than a 3 Series.
Classic rwd British sports car (I have one of these, I bought one at 19 and I'm 32 now. sub 10 sec 60mph stock and quite tunable).
TRIUMPH TR7 (1980) £2,500
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...
Save a little more and haggle a little harder and a V8 rwd British sports car is an option too.
tvr tasmin 350i 1987 (1987) £3,200
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...
Another TVR not far off your budget
TVR 290 S (1990) £3,000
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...
A bit of sporting Pork is a good option too.
PORSCHE 924 S 1988 (1988) £2,495
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...
One of the most recognised sports cars in the world. And a real hoot to drive, although it would fail your 10 sec to 60mph target (you can mod them though )
MGB GT 1.8 (1978) £2,350
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...
Another MG.
MG MIDGET 1500 1977 (1977) £1,275
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...
If you fancy a bit of project and something different and fun. Cheap insurance and free road tax
VW Avante MK1 (1969) £1,800
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...
Another wacky kit car, but kind of cool and with a V8
Eagle SS V8 (1971) £3,000
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...
