I bought one of these for commuting last November as my 911 was MIA during a rebuild. The 911 is now back…and I am afraid that the 328 had to be sold to make way for an E36 M3 saloon that was too good (and too cheap) not to buy!

Its a cruiser not a bruiser!
Make sure you remove the CDV from the line to the clutch slave to stop the clutch from slipping on high rpm gear changes, 5 min job that improves the clutch feel no end. The 328 coupe also had strengthening around the diff to stop it from pulling out of the car, not sure if the 4 door had this or not but worth finding out.
.Dale, how did the RX8 compare to the 8:20 lap time?
Just wondering what ballpark it was in given the minimal mods it had (and realising different tyres and time of year might be factors in making the comparison vague).
It's hard to argue with the value and ability of the E36. Good luck.

Great choice. Old 3 series make the best track cars.
If anybody wants a cheap but sorted E30 track car, there are a few very good cars for sale from the Production BMW Championship (PBMW) at the moment. £3k will get you a classic shaped 320i with full roll cage, race spec suspension, brakes and tyres.

I feel your pain about the RX-8. I also ignored cumulative knowledge and had to sell mine as a non-runner. I bought a Fiat Panda 100HP though which was hilarious for a couple of months although not the Teutonic powerhouse of an E46 328i which would have been a much better choice for my mileage...

One of these with the engine from a 328 like Dale's sounds like a quick/fun package. Four or five times the budget though...If anybody wants a cheap but sorted E30 track car, there are a few very good cars for sale from the Production BMW Championship (PBMW) at the moment. £3k will get you a classic shaped 320i with full roll cage, race spec suspension, brakes and tyres.

Fantastic cars.
I can't imagine our 328 Touring on the 'ring. Even with refreshed (but stock) suspension, the steering is remote and body control quite amusing in SE spec. You really do feel that weight moving around. But the engine's a peach and when you just flow with it rather than hustle, it's an enjoyable sweet package.
Always fancied seeing what it would be like with suspension mods and a bit stiffer, but it's the wife's commuter so that's never going to happen. I'll be watching this evolve with interest!

The e30 in the pic comes with a full spares package including a rebuilt 2.5l engine all for £3500.
Hard to argue with that.
