RE: SOTW: Chevrolet Blazer

300, don't make this thread your usual US car debate please. Remember that people are allowed to have a different view to you with regards to US cars, and a long answer to all who disagree just takes the thread off-track.
Also, there's no need for comments like your opening line...
Thanks
Apologies, however it's not about it being a US car or not. It's about being factually right and not dismissing a car purely based on the country of origin. Also, there's no need for comments like your opening line...
Thanks
That said it is pretty arrogant to think every US car must have a V8 in and that they are all the size of Brighton.... which seems to be the theme here. As said, if this was a Jap 4x4 and people where saying similar things I'd defend it just as much.
For reference:
Make/Model | Length | Width | Power |
---|---|---|---|
Blazer S10 SWB | 177.3 | 67.8 | 4.3 190hp |
Blazer S10 LWB | 188.8 | 67.8 | 4.3 190hp |
Discovery | 185.2 | 74.4 | 3.9 182hp |
Range Rover p38 | 185.5 | 74.4 | 4.0 189hp |
Land Cruiser 80 Series | 189.9 | 76 | 4.0 155hp |
Shogun | 186.6 | 74 | 3.5 186hp |
Isuzu Trooper | 183.5 | 72.2 | 3.0 156hp |
Yep definitely underpowered and waaay waaay bigger than the competition

To be fair 300, the Bronco is very cool looking thing. The blazer, to me at least, has similar appeal to an Espace in looks and ability...not what the vast majority on here would consider worthy of PHs attention. The Blazer is different yes but uninteresting at the same time.
Keep in mind that people are entitled to their opinion, you are also entitled to defend your opinion but you must realise that you are against the grain quite often...you dont make life easy for yourself sometimes.
I have no problem if people don't like 4x4's, don't like the looks the Blazer, hell don't even like GM...Keep in mind that people are entitled to their opinion, you are also entitled to defend your opinion but you must realise that you are against the grain quite often...you dont make life easy for yourself sometimes.
I just don't like people quoting false facts as though it then makes it ok to hate.
The S10 Blazer is just an SUV, I should think GM built millions of them. Are they wow, nope. They are pitched at the same market as a CR-V or Rav4 would be here in the UK. However with more off road ability, more power and usually higher spec. Nothing really to hate on.
Not the most fantastic of sheds, but hey, what do you want for £900? The 4.3 Vortec is the same engine as in my GMC, and with 190bhp/250Ib ft it's not a bad lump really, although it sounds pretty ordinary for a V6. I assume the body is galvanised as my GMC is, and that is still rust free at 16 years old.

The Vortec V6, didn't they use that in the GMC Syclone? albeit twin-turbo'd and uprated but the same basic engine.
The Blazer isn't great looking, not amazingly capable off road or particularly comfortable but it's shed money, disposable motoring. I'd take a punt on it if I needed something that size and didn't really care what mileage it gets from a tank.
^^^ This - it is exactly what it says it is. A shed... it's capable on road (if not brilliant), good off road and performs ok(ish). All this crap about 'low specific output rubbish US engines' is just that rubbish, the Yanks tend to design engines for THEIR specific requirements which means low stress and more torque than you'd normally see in most Euroboxes (waftiness if you like). Size-wise it's smaller than most mid-size estates and so not "too big for UK roads" (another ill-informed comment). The Blazer isn't great looking, not amazingly capable off road or particularly comfortable but it's shed money, disposable motoring. Were this a current vehicle (ie sold as new) I'd be likely agreeing with you about all it's faults - at this price level buy it for some winter weather shedding and spring garden-tidying duties and (especially with LPG) it's a winner
The old man had one of the big seventies V8 ones when i was a kid....that was cool
this one not so much.....
if you really had to surely stick to a european version.

Maybe its time to increase the shed budget in line with inflation?
The last three or four sheds have not fitted the shed criteria. As I recall, (and correct me if I'm wrong) but the criteria is 'something interesting for under a grand'
The last few have been yawnarama city. I mean... a poverty spec diesel merc? a mediocre mid nineties american SUV? Then prior to that a Merc with an AMG bodykit, and again a boring SUV with the Rangie?
Jeez Shed, sort your life out. I want to see a rear drive lunatic coupe or timebomb Alfa next week, and it best be freakin' good to make up for this dross.
Maybe you should coax Riggers back?

fk it, I'll stick my head above the parapet.
I like it.
Part of what I feel constitutes a good SOTW is being a bit of an oddball choice, a bit rare on UK roads. Various Audis, Mercs, BMWs (even the 525iX - most folk won't know the difference) and Jags do not meet this criteria and are all shed fails. I'm not even going to mention the snot-green Seat and the fking ZS. You need to go back to May to the Subaru SVX and the Fiat X1/9 before you find something that is remotely interesting.
Anyway, this Blazer thing: it's different, it's big, it's bold, the engine will sound great and it'll work in the winter when everyone else is parking their crappy Euroboxes in ditches. It'll need LPG'd but that's no big deal.
All-in-all: shed win.

You can't say you didn't have a far more PH car as an option! Lets look at this point by point:
V6 engine - so something above the norm in the UK since 95% of all vehicles seem to have a 4 pot motor
4.3 litres - again a rarity in the UK to have something of this displacement
190hp - in the UK most 'normal' cars fail to attain this level of HP. To date only the Focus ST or RS have made more in the Focus line up for instance
Performance - well despite being a 4x4 it seems to pretty much match a Golf GTI 0-60mph, if the Golf is quick enough for PH, then surely the Blazer is.
Rarity - offers a little uniqueness to the blandness of 'normal' UK cars.
RWD - yay!
Oh and you can go and doing a very motoring thing like this, something most Brits think only a Land Rover can do....
