PistonHeads, it's time to stop using pound feet for torque numbers, you're not silly Americans who can't comprehend the metric system, are you? :-)

Edit:

Oh, and I'll take the R8 over a top spec New Beetle any given day.
If the 911 is a beetle, isn't the R8 a pumped up TT, or a poor mans Gallardo?

This was the worst short PH article I've read in quite some time. Comparing two near-supercars based on numbers and in particular, their fuel efficiency and emissions? These cars are ultimately compared by how they drive. Not how the numbers read.
But since we're comparing...
I own a Porsche and I truly love it. But rear-engine versus mid-engine? No contest. And less power versus more power? That only helps. Not wild about all-wheel-drive in either of them though so since I can buy a 991S with RWD, points to Porsche. But it still leaves the Audi ahead for me. It's a stunningly striking car. A bit too chunky but the new/bigger Porsche is getting scary-large. And honestly, both are facelifts of old designs. In the case of Porsche, a 50-year-old design. So that one fails too.
Fast or slow, cornering or straight ahead, Audi's first shot in the semi-supercar wars is a spectacular hit. Painful as it is, an easy choice.

So you'd be bothered about tax and MPG with a £90,000 car?
I know this was aimed at someone else, but I own an R8 and do wince at the pumps and at insurance renewal time and tax day.

You'd be surprised how many people really stretch themselves to have a great car.

Incidentally, 911 servicing and parts, in my experience, is far more expensive than R8 servicing and parts.
And R8 way cheaper than Gallardo too, even though many of the parts are identical.

Are GTR running costs very high? I hear so.

So yes, an R8 is going to be cheaper than the 911 to run probably.

I don't own either, and probably never will.
In the not too distant future a very large inheritance is heading my way, but spend it in either?
No.
That's not to say that these cars are t excellent in their own way.
But.
I'd rather spend sensibly and purchase a used version, or a GT2 / 3 or a Ferrari 575.
To be fair, the opportunity to use the available performance is limited unless you are an idiot (in which case you should be removed from the road), so 1/10 this or x mph that is, by and large, irrelevant.
Some will buy because of aspiration or image, some because of performance or statistics.
It's a personal choice, so who is to say that one persons choice is right or wrong?
If that were the case, we'd all be driving the same cars, live in identical houses and have identical spouses. Oh, just that, that sounds like the good old bad old days of the ussr!
And thanks to the two gentlemen who are having the prolonged 'tif';

I am not attracted by the Nissan brand and their products at all. If they would build a nuclear-powered sports car with zero emissions which does 0-60 in -2 seconds (you arrive earlier than when you started) I would not want it.

911 is an icon, and the new one looks fine, although it has a few styling cues "borrowed" from AM.

So you don't think it's special 'because it's a Nissan'.

So it is totally to do with the brand. As I said - have you even been in or driven one?

Carrera 4S PDK Every day of the week and I actually like the Audi more. But for performance/£, the consumption, VED (not that it would really matter if you could afford a £100,000 car) etc etc the Porker wins hands down in my eyes.

I have had a 911 (996/997) and an R8 and am now back in a 997 and looking longingly at the 991's in the classifieds

The R8 was a brilliant car but the two seats not practical enough for me as a daily

I would definitely love to get another one should I get the chance

Fantastic bit of kit

New 991 is an amazing drive, real twin personality car.

New PDK is so superior to others on the market - the sound experience is also 'laugh out loud' as well.

Way ahead of the competition from Audi, AM etc. in my opinion after driving most of them.

Audi is a lovely car, the new 991 is incredible.

.....a used 599 at £90k is a compelling option though..

There are plenty of opportunities to use a cars performance - it's not all about top speed - it's about acceleration, braking, handling, steering feel, engine noise, and any number of other factors. It has nothing to do with being an idiot it's about ensuring your driving is suitable for the given conditions, and if that happens to be some of the lovely winding empty blacktop near where I live then so be it. Better that than the type of drivers who do 40 in the 30 near my daughters school, continue to go 40 as they go into a 60 limit.........

These sort of comments just make me shake my head frown

It's so incredibly shallow - judging something on a label rather than its abilities. Building a brand takes time but anyone with petrol in their veins can't fail to be excited by what Nissan have achieved with the R35 - I would imagine that pretty much all GTR's are run by enthusiasts, sadly it's the badge snobs that give the genuine Pork fans a bad name.

Sad really, as I would love to see Lotus get a seat at the big table.

It also seems to come from people who can't actually afford the car in the first place as well...

I know a couple of people with proper supercars (Scuderias etc) who also have GT-R's and love them.

I took a test drive in a used V8 R8 a couple of years ago and came away wondering what all the fuss was about.
Biggest dissappointment was that you couldn't here that wounderful exhaust from inside the car. I ended up with a used C2S in the end.

Why shouldnt I be able to afford a 911?

This thread is about new R8 vs new 911. I would, IF I would spend so much money, buy the "icon", not the "footballer's choice". And certainly not the "Anorak + Trainspotter's Favoured" (fast Japanese with bland styling and no history and no emotion).

I would actually prefer most of the 911 (from 1968 to today) to any Japanese Sports Car.
