This thread is about new R8 vs new 911. I would, IF I would spend so much money, buy the "icon", not the "footballer's choice". And certainly not the "Anorak + Trainspotter's Favoured" (fast Japanese with bland styling and no history and no emotion).
Congratulations on showing your ignorance...

How can a brand which has been racing (and beating Porsche in the process I should add) since 1964 have no history?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Skyline_GT-R

...and god knows how you can say an R35 has bland styling and a 911 doesn't. You may not like it, but I don't think anyone would call it bland.

As for 'no emotion'...have you even driven one or just quoting Clarkson?

20 years ago you would buy a porsche for 'image' and an Audi for being the thinking mans choice, not as pricey as BMW or MERC but a good solid german car.

Now I cant help but thinking most people buy an Audi for image not product.

Amazing now to think after all the outrageous wide arches and whaletails, that the 911 is the most understated sports car as you can find and as a result still the most practical properly fast car out there.

Personaly I think the 911 has aged beautifully and I would have one any day just for the shape (and as a bonus I would be getting a damn fine car)

R8 for me, but then I do absolutely love them. V8, Convertible, Manual. Can't help thinking when the 991 Turbo appears it's going to be a GTR competitor though (albeit for more money)

Between the two.

I honestly couldn't decide.

If it were to be a daily then the Pork would probably get my cash.

If I had that sort of cash lying around, I'd rather save (a lot) more cash and go for a 458.

Probably break my heart though.

I think the R8 is the more desirable car, as it has more wow factor than the Porsche. Seeing a R8 on the road is more impressive. Seeing the Porsche you think is that the new model? is it the turbo? Just doesn't have the same presence in my opinion.

Depends on where your priorities lie, I suppose.
Personally, I'd much rather the new Exige S if it was all about driving or a Cayman R/S as a good compromise. I'm not going to pay £60K plus for an Evora.

If I'm spending £90,000 on a car, I want it to be good at everything yes
So you want it to be good at carrying 4 people in total comfort? or be good at carrying loads of luggage?

Stupid, stupid comment.

If I had the ,the R8 for me, it was the one that really tried to keep up with my Cerbera!

But I recently got my first Porsche (Box S)and have to say I now understand the Porsche way of doing things.
So much so I'm tempted to get a 996 Turbo, they are so affordable, but my other car (STR) is just so good and compliments the Porsche in everything I want to do at the moment.

Problem owning a Porsche is the negativity you get from other road uses and a lot of that also appears here when Porsche are mentioned.

A bit of friendly banter is great, but some go too far.

Anyway where are the Corvette supporters to tell us neither??

Love the 991 so would have to be the 4S. Wife has a 997 C4S Cab and I test drove the 991 S when looking for a new car last year but I wanted a bit more performance so decided to test drive a GT-R. I was so impressed that I placed an order that day.

So to confirm a few things about the GT-R:

£75k is not cheap
Nissan has a racing pedigree
It doesn't ride like a track car
It is a drivers car
It does look special

The fight starts when the 991 Turbo arrives smile

Didn't you already lose the fight to the 997.2TS? :-)

I'm surprised nobody's brought up one of the most crucial aspects for comparison - numbers don't give the whole picture:

991 - Electric steering
V
R8 - Hydraulic steering

'nuff said.
Just because it's hydraulically operated doesn't necessarily mean it has good feel.

Nope the majority are crap looking, average front wheel drive cars with abysmal ride quality. As for top quality, have you seen how poorly they fare in JD Power etc. I also know of two that were absolutely appalling & cost Audi & later their owners a fortune in repairs.

Neither. GTR will eat them both at a fraction of the cost. 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. (spare me the 'it's not exotic enough' rhetoric - a GTR has so much swagger and pedigree its oozing it)
This. For me personally...

GTR > R8 > 911 carrera

Unless you're on a track I don't get the 'GTR will eat them' bit.

A 2007 R8 is now worth about £45k to £50k.
A 2007 911 is now worth about £25k.

This may well be because Porsche sell 10x as many 911s over here as Audi do R8s (according to howmanyleft.com).

I'd have an R8 if only because of that.
Good point. I really love the air colled Porsches and always will. But with each new generation of 911 they become more and more common. 911's are now the default car of choice in their segment. Rather like a Golf. Way too common. The depreciation is mental as a result.

Aside from the sheer untouchable ability, the rarity is why I voted for the GTR above. Of course the badge will keep many away. Which is a good thing.

At ease gentlemen.

Forgive me for opening up a Pandora's Box with the original GTR comment lol. I had no idea the emotions and arguments following on from it would be so visceral!

At the end of the day, let's have a good time on this forum. Each man to his own when it comes to cars. I like GTR's, my neighbour likes Porsche's! - there's nothing wrong with that!

+1

I would have all three, if I could afford it - instead I go these damn super cars days to drive and dribble. biggrin

Bad article btw - if I wanted the stats, I would go to Whatcar. PH needs to do a true comparison and Monkey (Chris Harris) like video.
