Well, you could have THAT effect even with half of the money. Get yourself a 550, or even a 355, in bright red or yellow, drill some holes in the exhaust, park on handicap spaces leaving the engine on so babies in prams can deeply inhale your non-cat fumes, and hand out 5-pound notes to young immigrant, maybe some bibles as well.

The point of a SE-spec 911 is that is it the most reliable/tame/easy-to-deal-with/discreet of all sports cars. And of all reliable/tame/easy-to-deal-with/discreet German cars it is the most sporty one. Will it "turn heads"? Probably not. But it will provide fun, classic design, modern technology, value for money (unless you fall for the numerous "limited edition") and generally a "good package" IN ONE CAR. It is a good deal, not only a compromise. Yes, there are many of them around, at least in certain parts of the world. So what? People like it.

The point of a R8...i dont know...

BTW I do not aspire to own either of them.

My choice would be the Gallardo even 2nd hand, if I was paying that much for a car I would want at least a couple of people to turn their heads and even maybe give me the 1 fingered wave!!

You know what bugs me about this..... the seats. You look at any fast Audi seats, and they look like cr*p after only a few thousand miles. Just look through the classifieds and you'll see all the R8's rarely have a drivers side internal photo. It really bugs me, to the extent that it put me off buying one. Where as my totally knackered old 911 seats are almost like new, its the little things that decades of updates iron out I suppose.... either way im done with little 2 seaters, need something bigger and not so keen on either of those.

Why not leave 'em to it?

Winner has to drive an Austin Marina for a week, loser gets to drive it for a fortnight.
Technically, they were marketed as Morris Marinas in Britain. I had one of them as one of my first cars. paperbaggetmecoat

In the real world a GTR is (relative to the 991) even more exploitable than on a track.

Unless you were in a Turbo you really wouldn't see which way it went...
Well you would because you'd be doing the same speed on a speed limited road...

Surely...
Even on an un-speed limited road and limit point driving there are few areas where a GTR should outrun a boggo 911.

You can go dangerously fast increasingly quickly in more powerful cars, and the opportunity to use the performance on hand to some kind of point to point advantage becomes increasingly small.

Once you get over 250bhp/tonne and 400bhp you really don't need much effort to reach peak speeds that are well beyond limit point on most roads bar wide open DC's or M-ways, and with the bhp/tonne on offer you can quickly get to 1 lepton on most roads in a few seconds (ie, 50-100mph is maybe one gears worth of fun and you are probably going too fast)

Obviously in the real world where some drivers are idiots, some are not so good at limit point driving, and some cars are easier than others to extract a proportion of their performance, then a divide may open up... but as we know that isn't indicative of the cars performance, merely the weak link of the human behind the wheel!

1550kgs v 1820kgs, you really notice the weight in the B8 RS4 performance wise, the engine feels blunter and needs full throttle up the top end of the rev range before it takes off, you cant hear much inside the RS4 either
Still doesn't explain why you'd not use the RS5 V8 in the R8, i also think it makes no sense.

Just over 400bhp from a V8 these days is a bit wimpy, for a car with a price tag of 90k, especially.

audi are like apple, upgrades are just enough, with always something left for the next upgrade smile

we already speculated that the newer V8 will turn up in the R8 MK2 due in a couple of years time

personally thou the V8 is fast enough as is for a road car, especially with the super fast duel clutch box

I would have all three, if I could afford it
You could pull the skirt in your sexy R8.
Then knock her up and use the 991 as the dull family wagon.
Finally visit the ring in your GTR to feel phenomenal.

Each has a role to play smile
The GTR left me cold on the ring - much prefer a lighter/funner car for that - 1.7t is too much. Amazing car on a public road especially in bad weather, and though the inside looks like a plastic PS3 game console, it's incredible value secondhand.

991 c2s with the performance pack was far from dull and good second hand buy. Interior is a class above most.

The R8 though like an Audi inside, drove and handled extremely well and doesn't need any bodykit to improve the looks biggrin

A 2007 R8 is now worth about £45k to £50k.
A 2007 911 is now worth about £25k.

This may well be because Porsche sell 10x as many 911s over here as Audi do R8s (according to howmanyleft.com).

I'd have an R8 if only because of that. But given 80k to spend, you can have a 488bhp V8-S F-Type, which looks like it'll be more desirable than either, IMO.
You should try comparing a 997 C4S with the R8 for a better like for like, in terms of performance & new price as C2's were only just above about £60k new, then you're looking more like £38k for a decent 07 with the same sort of miles as a £45k R8
I do agree that R8s have held value better though for sure, rareness, hand-built, and definitely more supercar appeal mainly due to being less practical, glass engine cover, and metal h gate gear change mainly. Interior is not special enough unless you spec loads of leather & carbon bits.
I have a 997 at the mo, I drove them all & found the R8 to be more special overall. I found them both pretty similar to drive, but chose the 997 this time as I wanted a convertible & it was £15k cheaper than the coupe R8. Will almost certainly get an R8 or Vantage next. Didn't like the Vantage to drive or found it well built but can't resist the looks & image.

I don't know the extent of the facelift to the R8, but I do love the new lights they put on the car. The LED system looks really sharp.
