Driving a better car than your boss
Discussion
My cars have always been better than that of the boss....from the MX5 to the Elise to the Evora....working in a school you should see the sheds...all manner of Kias, old VWs, diesel hacks etc. The middle classes can't be seen in anything too flash...that's why they buy Volvo's for £40000 when they could have all manner of Porsches, Lotus', TVRs, Bentleys, Jags, some of them nearly new, etc for the same money. It's all subjective though...they probably wouldn't be seen dead in my car either, far too nouveau, or Chav.
LOL some people don't like it - but as others have said some bosses do prefrer to spend their money on holidays, hookers and hair transplants etc.
Whilst not my boss as such I used to contract at a govt department (who look after environmental matters). The head of IT used to have a new 2 litre 1 series convertible, I used to have a commute focus but would from time to time drive in my V8 6 series convertible and where possible park right next to him, or nick his preferred spot. It used to make his st itch, especially if I tore past him on the motorway on the way in and was walking into the office with a big grin and a wave having just parked up.

Hehe - use it for my wifi also and oldest kids friends always have a little chuckle when they see it pop up on their phones etc "connecting to pissflaps". Wife was disgusted, even more so after I said I wanted a SSID and username for stuff that reminded me of her and it was either that or spanielsears! It didn't stop me getting a job or get me fired, but I was 100% treated like the little rich ahole for driving to work in a 1989 944 S2. I was 21 at the time, but if I could afford it on my pay (having bought a shady one and restored it over a year) im quite sure the office full of senior very well paid engineers could have as well....and thats an office full of people who know their cars so the lack of age related plates shouldnt matter :/
After I got my 323i I also gained a wife and a move to a new, remote office where I was in charge. My boss was 70 miles away in another group of islands.
He came up on a periodic visit to check the books, etc, and noticed the Beemer parked outside. When he asked who it belonged to I naturally said it was mine (being young, proud of my shiny BMW and having had several hours of rampant sex with my new 18 year old wife the night before so was in a very good mood)
I got a surprise visit from the internal auditors the next week

I got into a bit of hassle over this years ago. I bought a 1 year old Range Rover with private plate which looked brand new (had about 5k on the clock). The first day I turned up into work with it was the same day the directors took delivery of new LR Discoveries. They are all standing outside admiring them when I trundle up and park my Range Rover next to them. They were not best pleased.

But that's the point I think, a bit of discretion might be required at times.
People really should know better. A colleague of mine split up with his wife and they sold the house. He used his share of the equity to do what most of us would do: Own a series of desireable £20k motors. A TVR Cerbera, a Viper, a Lotus Carlton, A 996. Looked a bit incongruous in the car park and no doubt people not in the know were thinking 'flash git'.
Another colleague works his arse off and lives off mum and supernoodles but runs new Posches and GT-R's riding the finance/depreciation curve. Fair play to him but I wouldn't do it!
Anyway, think you HAVE to be aware of the perceptions a car can generate. A boss, a contractor, a sales rep turning up in the wrong car can send a very negatve message.
I think I'd have a 5 series Diesel if I wanted to send a message of professional conservatism, and save the fun stuff for the weekend!

Got my Fabia vRS Estate the day I handed in my notice for my last job. Picked the car up in the morning, drove to work and handed my notice in. Never had to work another day because I was owed holidays. That was a good moment.
New job I have the better car. My boss runs round in a Fiesta. He's really into cars and went to Goodwood this year. He could easily buy a better car but it would get battered carry crap around so he'll run this until it breaks. He also has a motorbike but I know nothing about it. There wasn't a problem but he did enquire how I could afford it. I saved hard since buying my last car for my next one and that's what I've always done.
