Judging by the speed I was being overtaken by today...no it wasn't.

No. You do need something really fast though - 500 bhp/tonne fast.

It's not very common, most people do 99% of mileage on dual carriageways and if they get on an A road don't know how to do it.

I go up to Norfolk now and then to see my mum and they don't really do dual carriageways there so it's nice to have the opportunity to overtake, just because you can...hold back, drop a cog, accelerate, pull out, floor it smile

I did some ace overtakes today to and from work. Proper ones in addition to the old sidling up the outside at roundabouts and measuring the timing to get round quicker and cleaner than the 4 cars I would have sat behind. I've learned a lot about momentum over the last month instead of powering past

I can only think it's a cheery flash of the lights to say 'good move, old boy'. And that's from the ones coming towards me and the ones in my mirrors. Sometimes you want to but you know it will just scare the st out of them. So you don't.

Living where I do I often get the chance to overtake stuff and do, easily possible even with 75bhp. Been pushed in to the right hand side banking once by a BMW 5 series, I don't know if they didn't realise I was there, or knew full well, but it concentrated me somewhat.

Don't get the flashing lights and things everyone else is on about though.

Brake woman was on the radio a few weeks back and yep, that's what she said

The most dangerous manoeuvre a driver can ever do and should be avoided at all costs ...... Apparently

Can you believe an M&S lorry actually helped me overtake the other day. I hope he was helping anyway - I pulled out to have a look and he scrubbed a good 10mph off whilst I overtook, and gave me a short flash after I pulled in.

+1 this makes perfect sense.

Ideally you should really move around on foot to maximise the safety benefits.

Either that or avoid stupid s from 'Brake'.

Nor me.

My commute (23 miles) takes in 8 miles of A road NSL, and I perform an overtake at least once every other day. Since 2008. Never had any flashy main beam shyte from the overtakee.

No, that's dangerous too. You could slip and fall. Happens all the time - just watch some day time tv, it's full of people that have slipped on wet floors etc

I suggest we should ban all cars, bikes etc and even ban walking. We should all get about be laying on the floor and moving like catapilars. Much safer

Same here. Perhaps the OP's mention of oncoming cars flashing their lights means it was a bit closer than normal........?

Loads of people flash and take offence of being overtaken down this way.

Most of my journeys involve an overtake.

Most of them are pretty good.

Have the occasionally flash (and usually then there is LOADS of room).

If it wasn't "On" I wouldn't commit to it!

I think one of the most dangerous manoeuvres a driver can do is to plough head first in to a reinforced concrete wall at top speed.
