That's appalling... Saved only by other people making allowances. There was a safe overtake in there, given a LOT more power and better observation, though...

You selfish barstards, think about the environment don't you remember we have been recommended to change gear at 2500rpm by the government to save the penguins
2.5k's just out of the useable rev range of my car! It just gets noisier after that rather than anything else. I had a willing participant in an overtake today, saw me coming, indicated left. If I'd been a biker I'd have stuck my leg out in appreciation, but I stuck with a wave once past

I remember the days, when, a faster moving car was approaching a slower moving vehicle, the slower vehicle would indicate to the left. Communicating to the faster car it was safe to overtake.

How times change.....

I don't overtake anymore. I just potter down the inside lane at 60 passing folks in the other two lanes that are in a rush.biggrin

My theory on those that don't overtake when they can is that as more people have downsized into a 'more economical' car they also find it lacks power.

I had a 1.2 TDi Ibiza (ecomotive 75hp) as a loan car recently and tried an overtake, when it was clear, safe and suitable.

I nearly soiled my self.

In the end i just sat back and 'relished' getting 65mpg (80 claimed apparently!). Sign of the times, i'm afraid. (Very afraid!)

I do most of my overtaking on single lane good country roads, in either my 320BHP TR8, or my S2000.

Both of these cars, when overtaking something doing 80 or 90Km/H, do get with it quickly, & somewhat noisily, when in 2Nd & 3Rd gears respectively. I found I was getting flashed by some drivers, which never happened when I overtook in my wife's Mazda 2.

I decided it must be a combination of how quickly I appeared, & how much noise the cars were making, that was upsetting/frightening the other driver.

To overcome this I now still accelerate just as quickly, in a suitable gear, until just before our drivers windows are about level, usually at about +40Km/H faster. I then slip into top, & glide quietly past with little throttle. I then indicate for some time, my intention to pull back in before doing so. This also helps reassure any oncoming driver that all is safe also.

I believe this avoids a fright from a fast noisy car appearing suddenly, & fits in better with the reaction time of those I am likely to be passing.

I have found I no longer get flashed using this technique. This bit of consideration for the effect of my cars performance on slow drivers costs me nothing, I just wish I'd started it earlier.
