OK, the missus needs a new car to replace her Peugeot 206CC HDi as it is approaching 50k miles and we tend to change her cars around then as she covers circa 20k p.a.

We’ve had two 206 HDi’s now and fancy a change, we also want to go towards something German or Japanese this time.

Her requirements are a small(ish) car of similar size to the 206, maybe a little bigger. It must achieve a realistic 40mpg combined (she gets 52mpg from the 206 but willing to take a bit of a hit on that!), petrol or diesel not fussed – but it does need to be nippy, so no wheezing 1 litres.

She would like another convertible (preferably hard top) or a hatchback with a panoramic sunroof would also do the trick. An ability to drive in the snow is also a requirement (so FWD/4WD preferred), but chucking winter tyres on pretty much anything could solve that.

Budget is around £6k, she doesn’t want a BMW, so far I have come up with an Audi TT 150bhp convertible and a Mini Cooper with the panoramic sunroof, but both will only really achieve 30-35mpg I reckon. Any other suggestions?

Thanks smile

Default PH response, but MX-5? Should be able to do mid-30's if driven gently, top-down motoring and very capable thing. Winter/all-season tyres easily available for the smaller-than-Mini wheels.

MINI is a good option. Plus you'll be able to drive it guilt free.

I'm assuming you change her car once she has done 50K in it (every 2 and a half years) rather than once the car reaches 50K total?

She's not keen on MX5's, too girly apparently!! Weird, because she's quite a petite, girly sort of person. Fine by me, as I don't like them either.

Mini is a good bet but not particularly economical - and diesels are still expensive.

Changing it at 50k miles - bought it with 16k on the clock. The new car would probably have around 40k-50k on the clock, but I would prefer that in a German or Jap car - in a French car I've always felt it's time to sell!

Hmm, found another possibility - the one BMW she would go for, a Z4!

37mpg from the 2.0 six cylinder, sounds reasonable...

Z4 is a good shout, a friend has the 3litre and on a commute can get very good mpg out of it.

Cheers Jay, I reckon a 2.0 would be a good balance for her and still fun enough for when I drive it!
