So after one of my friends realisation that a car is just an A to B tool for him he wants to downgrade to cheap as possible motoring, was originally thinking of some rubbish little Clio etc but I think something a bit bigger will be a better car for him.

Have been looking at 306 D Turbo, plenty for under a grand but know nothing about them, looking for experiences from people who have owned them, reliability, driveability, MPG, parts prices etc.

Have also looked at Mk1 Focus TDCIs so if anyone got ideas of something similiar to these I havent thought of it would be much appreciated.

Cracking little cars which, with minimal maintenance, will be good for 300k+ miles. Can be lively and entertaining to drive, beware the lift-off oversteer if you're really trying!

Engines are bulletproof if oil is changed every 6000 and cambelt every 40,000
Rear suspension bushes/mounts will give up the ghost at about 150k
Front suspension will get clonky at 100k and will need bushes and links.
Turbo will blow its seal at about 180-200k, but a good s/h one will be about £100.
Get one with the Bosch pump, not the inferior Lucas or French things (can't remember the name!) and you can run it on a mix of veggie oil. And you can have a little fiddle with the mixture screw to get another 10bhp!
Front leccy windows and/or central locking will expire at 8 years old, but many auto-elecs have a ready-made bit of loom to plug in for a cheap fix. (The cables break where they are constantly bent by the door opening and closing).

Bits are as cheap as chips from GSF and Europarts and they can be kept going on a shoestring.

I'd avoid turbo diesels for shed motoring.

There are any number of components that could fail making it scrap.

Having said that I had a 306 HDI which felt pretty pokey and gave a solid 50mpg and 600 + miles to a tank full.

Diesels are hateful things though and you may as well wear a hair shirt to save money.
