Be gentle with me, I'm from Scotland and live in Cambridge, so London to me is just one big motoring 'here be dragons'. I still get excited when I drive on the M25…

Anyway, on Saturday evening the wife and I have to attend her friend's wedding party in Gardners Lane, EC4V. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem - jump on the tube at Epping, off at St Paul's and walk, but this is out very first night away from our six month old son and I know she's prefer to be close to the car in case we need to beat a hasty retreat.

So two questions, what will the journey be like early Saturday evening, and where is good to park without being utterly dry bummed cost wise?

Cheers

Douglas

If it were me, i'd dump the car in Finsbury Circus (off London Wall) - and hop in a cab 5mins up the road. Or there's an NCP in Finsbury Square (Moorgate) or the London Wall car park... not sure it'll be open late though.

When I had to drive to work I parked up on Aldermanbury Av. (between St Paul's and Guildhouse) There are a lot of other roads around in that vacinity around Greasham St and the Lloyds building. I arrived at 8:30 on a Monday to an empty road full of spaces and knowing what he area is like on a Saturday I'll be perfectly fine there and a sub 5 minute walk from the venue.

This Saturday is the Lord Mayor's Parade so depending on what time you will get there it could be chaos.

Try parking in the Barbican (entrance on silk street) - indoors, security and good weekend rates. Assuming you arrive after dark the parade will have gone past so shouldn't be a problem getting in there, unless someone knows different.

I would park in the West India Quay car park here:

Easy to get to from Cambridge, pretty cheap, and handy for either the Jubilee Line or DLR

If you can navigate around, there is a good car park on Cornwall Road near Waterloo Station. Quick walk up the South Bank and over Blackfriars Bridge and you're at St Paul's.

Do the Epping thing.

It will be FAR quicker exiting London via this route at short notice than it would be driving out of town and up to Cambridge. Any route out of town for you to get to the M11 or A10 on a Saturday night will take you through congested areas, so likely to take upwards of an hour just to get clear of London.

I would check TfL engineering timetable though - often stuff going on over a weekend limiting service....

Unless he parks where I suggested. Then it's straight onto the A13, up the North Circular and onto the M11 with no problem.

Don't tell anyone, but the service lane under the London museum at the St Pauls end of London Wall is always free. Then it's just a 1 min walk.

Thanks for all the advice, the wife has said she wants us to take the car, so I'll be relying on it tomorrow.

I'd second this, I often park here on a Saturday afternoon/evening. It is manned 24/7 and has a LOT of CCTV. Otherwise the roads around Stonecutters Street/Shoe Lane usually have spaces - in the City you can park on single-yellows after 11am on Saturdays.

As said above pay and display bays and single yellow in the City of London are unrestricted after 11am on Saturdays. City will be pretty quiet on a Saturday night around the St Pauls area, don't think you'll have much of a problem parking.

There's a few car park spaces here, Blackfriars Underpass, which is right next to Gardeners Lane, that will be free of charge and as they're quite well hidden, may not be taken. The surrounding area is pretty much double yellows. If that fails, Finsbury Circus as others have said. You may find a space on Cloak Lane, near Canon St station or Eastcheap/Great Tower St and the side streets there, not too far to walk.

I work near by. On the weekends/bankholidays, if I need to go in I park for free on Tudor Street or around that area. Never really had a problem

There is a huge, secure car park on Queen Victoria Street. It's less than a 5 minute walk to St Pauls and at the weekend, it costs peanuts to park there (I think last time I parked there at the weekend, it was £2.50 all day or something crazy, although that was a couple of years ago).

ETA: It's Baynard House - mentioned above.

Baynard House is my go-to in the area. Happily leave the Ferrari there too, so no worries on that front.

Will be chaos this weekend though.

Aldersgate Street has a car park, used to be £5 a day on the weekends. Just off the museum of london roundabout.
